The seventh of eleven children of a missionary couple out of Costa Rica, Arturo Kinch enrolled at Rockmont College in 1974. A three-sport athlete for the Rockets, Kinch competed in basketball, soccer, and downhill skiing, before graduating in 1979 with degrees in biblical studies and camping and recreation. According to a 1984 Seattle Times article, Arturo merely “took up skiing to stay in shape for soccer while attending Rockmont. He tried out for the college ski team because that seemed far better than riding the bench as a third-team basketball player. Despite his inexperience, he wound up as the ski team’s top point scorer a couple of seasons. Encouraged by several coaches, Kinch decided to keep racing. He learned that to be eligible for international competition, he had to belong to his national ski association.” At 27, he founded the Costa Rica Ski Association.
In 1980, Arturo Kinch competed at the Lake Placid Olympics – as Costa Rica’s first and only Olympic athlete in the sport. “The sole competitor from a country without snow”, would compete as an Olympic athlete three more times: in 1984, 1988, and Salt Lake’s 2002 games. Not bad for a skier whose career began in college.
Now a customer service representative for United Airlines, Arturo has one daughter and resides in Denver.
A native of British Columbia, Canada, David Daniels moved to the US early in life and attended high school in Oregon, graduating in 1989. A passion for basketball took him to Clackamas Community College the following fall, and two years later Dave transferred to Colorado Christian University. Though he played for the Cougars only two years, he still appears in the top five of 14 CCU Basketball records.
A two-time All-Conference athlete, Dave helped lead the 1993 team to the first of two conference titles, and was also honored as the 1993 Colorado Athletic Conference MVP. He ranked second in the nation in assists the same year.
Not ready to give up basketball after his senior season, Dave spent time playing on two CBA teams and with the Rocky Mountain Review Summer Nuggets team before joining Athletes in Action in 1994.
A member of Athletes in Action for nine years, Dave joined the AIA staff in 1998, shortly after playing in the World University Games in 1997 and the World Championships in 1998. His experience as a player culminated at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, where he represented Canada on their national team.
Dave returned to his alma mater in 2003 as part of an Athletes in Action campus ministry, serving as CCU’s Athletic Chaplain. His work for the kingdom, especially after graduation from CCU, is what we wish to honor him for tonight.
Dave and his wife Vicki reside in Lakewood with their seven-month old daughter Kee-ruh.
As a student at the University of Colorado in the late 1950s, John Musciano spent two years playing basketball for the Buffaloes. After graduation in 1960, he served in positions as coach, Athletic Director and Assistant Principal at the high school level. Soon after, John was named Area Assistant Superintendent in Jefferson County, and served as principal of Bear Creek and Pomona High Schools. In the early nineties, he oversaw the opening of Standley Lake High School in Broomfield, and served as the school’s – and my - principal for several years. After retirement from service in the Jeffco School System, John accepted a position in the Colorado Christian University School of Education. While on faculty at CCU, John served as Supervisor of Student-Teachers, Director of Secondary Education, Dean of the School of Education, and our favorite, Faculty Athletic Representative. He retired from his position at CCU in 2001.
John served as chairman of the Colorado FCA Board of Directors for two years, and is currently the President of the Jefferson County Administrators Association and the Board of Education for Shelterwood, a Christian learning organization. In addition, he performs consultations for the National Assessment of Educational Progress, a group which completes testing as part of the No Child Left Behind program.
John and his wife Mary Ann now live in Littleton and have four step children, five grand children and one great grand daughter.
