The CCU baseball team plays the majority of their home games at All Star Park (Lakewood, CO). When weather does not allow games to be played in Denver, CCU Baseball will play home games at Runyon Field in Pueblo, CO. The location of all Cougar games can be found on the Schedule/Results page.
May 21, 2010 - With 2 NCCAA World Series wins under their belt, Colorado Christian baseball was confidently hoping for a win in Friday's semi-final game against Olivet Nazarene University at Legacy Field.
In keeping with the solid play of CCU's pitchers at the 2010 tournament, Trey Stastny came out strong, holding ONU batters scoreless and allowing only 2 hits in the first 5 innings of the game. The junior pitcher from Durango threw 3 strikeouts, but would eventually give up 6 total hits and 4 earned runs in the complete game.
It was a quiet game until the sixth inning, when the Tigers scored the first 3 runs of the game on 3 hits. The NAIA squad out of Bourbonnais, IL crossed home once more in the seventh, and despite a David Altman triple in the bottom of the final inning, eventually sent the number 10 seed Cougars home with a 4-0 loss and a tie for fifth place in the post-season tournament.
Colorado Christian hitters managed only 3 hits in the contest (Altman, Chad Meske, Doug Pavlich), but left 6 batters on base, including 2 in the first and 2 in the second. Stastny was saddled with the loss.
CCU ended the year with a 13-36, and with the loss to Olivet Nazarene, said goodbye to 8 faithful seniors.
May 20, 2010 - Playing in a must-win contest against King College out of Bristol, TN, the Cougars of Colorado Christian brought the heat on offense, rattling off 11 hits and scoring 9 runs - 8 of them earned - to stay alive in the National Tournament.
Though King got on top early, scoring the first run of the game, CCU answered in a big way in the second inning. After Christian took over the lead, scoring three times off singles from Michael Cavazos, JL Buchanan and Brandon Adams, NCCAA All-American Doug Pavlich widened the lead to seven when a grand slam to left field scored Ryan Serena, Seve Carbajal, and Chris Guyer.
King managed another run in the top of the third, but the Tornado could not put together a strong enough game to stop the CCU momentum.
Buchanan crossed home once more in the third, and a Pavlich double down the left field line scored Serena and gave CCU their ninth - and final - run of the game. Colorado Christian won 9-2. (Boxscore)
Buchanan (3 for 3, 2 runs) and Pavlich (2 for 4, 1 run, 5 RBIs) led the way for the Cougar offense, while sophomore pitcher Aaron Orr led a Cougar defense that allowed only 5 hits and 0 earned runs on the day. Pitching a complete game, Orr threw 5 strikeouts in the CCU win.
Colorado Christian will play again Friday at 10:00 am EST against the winner of the North Greenville/Spring Arbor game. Follow the action online here.
May 19, 2010 - Though they were the underdog heading into the 2010 NCCAA World Series, Colorado Christian baseball knocked off Southeastern College in a 7/10 matchup Tuesday morning at Legacy Field in Mason, OH. Needing two runs in the final inning to take the game, the Cougars got help from sophomore David Altman, who delivered a walk-off single with the game tied at four in the seventh to give the Cougars the win and keep their championship hopes alive.
CCU senior pitcher Jake Logan got the start and the win for Colorado Christian, giving him a 7-8 record on the year.
NCCAA First Team All-American Doug Pavlich proved his worth in a game two contest between CCU and North Greenville University out of Tigerville, SC. The third batter of the game, the senior catcher rocked a solo homerun down the left-field line to give the Cougars the lead and what would turn out to be their only run of the game.
Senior Lawson Cheek held the Crusaders scoreless through the bottom of the fifth, when NCCAA All-American Markus Duckworth scored on a CCU error. NGU scored three more times in the sixth to take the 4-1 advantage and eventually the win.
Christian plays the King College/Judson winner Thursday at 11:00 am MST in the double elimination tournament. Live stats can be found at http://www.prascopark.com/livescoring/scoreboard.aspx.
May 17, 2010 – The 2009-10 school year has come to an end, and with it the usual busyness that accompanies CCU’s 900+ students. The Lakewood campus is quiet, the apartments are empty, and the available parking spots abound. While most of CCU’s students have gone home to start jobs or reconnect with family and friends, there are a select few who are still very busy with the business of the 09-10 school year.
May 19-22 in Mason, OH, CCU Baseball will be competing for their shot at a National Championship.
After winning their third-straight NCCAA Central Region banner, the well-traveled Cougar squad departed for Ohio Sunday. The #10 seed in the tournament, Colorado Christian is set to play #7 Southeastern College at 10:00 am on Wednesday. The winner of the CCU-SC game will play #2 seeded North Greenville College at 4:15 pm. The NCCAA World Series is a ten-team tournament played at Prasco Park in Mason.
Leading the Cougar team is NCCAA Central Region Coach of the Year Rob Pegg. Pegg earned the honor after his squad won the regional tournament in Oklahoma City last week. Also honored (with an NCCAA First Team All Region nod) at the tournament were Christian seniors Lawson Cheek and Doug Pavlich. The award marks one of several for CCU catcher Pavlich. Originally from Golden, CO, the 6-4 senior also received NCAA Division II Second Team All-Region recognition, in addition to a Second Team All-RMAC and First Team RMAC All-Academic team selection.
Live stats will be available from Prasco Park throughout the tournament.
May 12, 2010 – Despite losing the first game of the day to Mid-America Christian, CCU Baseball won when it counted Wednesday, taking the second of two games against MACU to clinch the NCCAA Central Region title and their third-straight bid to the National Christian College Athletic Association Baseball Championships.
After going 2-0 in the double-elimination tournament, the Cougars had a cushion the Evangels didn’t. And though Mid-America beat CCU 8-5 in the early contest, the loss only meant another match-up between the two teams.
For the second straight day, the CCU bats were relatively quiet against the host team. Only five Cougar batters connected on MACU pitches, accounting for eight hits on the day. David Altman led Colorado Christian in their attempt to make it an Oklahoma sweep, going three for four (including one double and two RBIs). Slow scoring followed, and though CCU jumped on top of the Evangels 2-0 in the first inning, they wouldn’t score again until four hits in the seventh inning set up Brandon Adams, Kyle Yanke and Ryan Serena to cross home and move the score to within three before a Cougar strikeout ended the inning and the game.
Trey Stastny pitched just over four innings after receiving the start. The junior pitcher gave up ten hits before being relieved by sophomore Austin Bell. Jeff Ross got the start in game two, though it was Jake Logan – pitching in relief for Aaron Orr – who took home the win. The senior from Paola, KS pitched only one inning, but he held the Evangels to no hits, throwing three strike-outs along the way.
Still riding their momentum from the earlier game, Mid-America controlled much of the deciding game after going up 7-5 after three innings. Though innings four and five were scoreless for both teams, the excitement was far from over. The Evangels scored twice more in the sixth, extending their lead to four. As it turned out, four would not be enough. With the game on the line and four runs to recover, CCU batters stepped up. Hitter after hitter got on base, and by the time that JL Buchanan’s double to deep left scored Yanke and Doug Pavlich, the score was 9-8. Though Christian’s next batter – David Altman – grounded out to the shortstop, Logan was able score and tie the game.
After Logan struck-out the only three seventh-inning hitters for MACU, and the first two batters for CCU grounded out, the possibility of extra innings began to look like a reality. Seve Carbajal singled to right field to keep CCU’s three-peat hopes alive, however, and after Ryan Serena reached on a walk, the Cougars had two runners on and a strong-hitting Doug Pavlich at the plate. Pavlich singled an Ivan Juvera pitch to left-center, giving Carbajal all the window he needed. The sophomore from Faith Christian rounded third and made it home, giving Colorado Christian the thrilling 10-9 win.
Headed home with another banner, CCU will use their short four-day break to prepare for their third-straight trip to Nationals – a ten-team tournament in Cincinnati, OH.
May 11, 2010 - Just one day after taking a game from Central Baptist College in dominating fashion, CCU won their second game of the NCCAA Central Region Tournament, beating host Mid-America Christian University 4-3 in a game that wasn't decided until the second half of the final inning.
Like they did on Monday, Colorado Christian took an early lead in the game after going up 1-0 in the first
inning of the game. Mid-America would not go down quietly, however - the Evangels tied the game in the second and again in the fifth after lone runs in the second and fourth innings had CCU up 3-1. The scoreboard sat at 3-3 until the final scheduled inning of the contest, when the Cougars scored the winning run to gain the 4-3 win and a bye going into the championship game.
Second baseman Ryan Serena led the way for the Colorado Christian offense, going two for three on the day, scoring twice and posting one RBI. Out hit 9-5 in the contest, the Cougars relied on strong pitching from senior Lawson Cheek (three earned runs in 94 pitches) and solid play from defenders who stranded MACU runners and kept the Evangels from turning hits into runs.
With a 2-0 record, CCU is just one game away from winning the double-elimination tournament. The Cougars play the Mid-America - Central Baptist winner Wednesday at 10 am MST. A win gives Colorado Christian the title, while a loss forces an additional game against the same opponent at 2 pm.
May 11, 2010 – With a win over Central Baptist College Monday in the first game of the NCCAA Central Region Baseball Tournament, Colorado Christian University took one step closer to repeating – for the third time – as regional champions.
The Cougars took control of the game in the very first inning, scoring three runs off two hits, including a
single up the middle by JL Buchanan that scored Seve Carbajal and Doug Pavlich. Though CBC answered with three runs of their own in the second, it would be the end of the scoring for the NAIA team from Conway, Arkansas. Senior Jake Logan held the Mustangs to only three hits, allowing only two earned runs on the day.
CCU blew the game open in the third, muscling six straight hits past Central Baptist defenders. Carbajal’s double to deep left center late in the inning helped increase the widening Christian lead to five, and kept the Cougar momentum rolling into the fourth. With ten runs scored in two innings and a ten-run NAIA rule being played, CCU hitters had done all they needed to by the fifth. Though they managed two hits, Central Baptist could do nothing to narrow the score or lengthen the game, and the Cougars celebrated a five-inning 13-3 win.
CCU plays host Mid America Christian at noon on Tuesday.
May 5, 2010 - Colorado Christian senior Doug Pavlich was honored by the Rocky Mountain Athletic
Conference Wednesday. The 6-4 senior from Golden received All-Conference Second Team honors, just two short weeks after being picked to the RMAC All-Academic First Team.
Pavlich led CCU in seven categories this season, including batting average, slugging percentage, runs scored, hits, runs batted in, and putouts. His .737 sluggung percentage was fourth in the RMAC this year, and he ranked sixth in the conference in hits with 65.
The award marks the first for the Cougar catcher, and is the only RMAC post-season award for CCU this season.
May 1, 2010 - Colorado Christian baseball put up a tough fight Saturday, but they couldn't catch a hot Mesa squad that outscored the home team 19-10 and 12-4 on the final day of regular season play. (Boxscores)
It was a big day for CCU seniors who, after being recognized by fans and players for their contributions
as Cougars, put up big numbers in an attempt to help upset the third-best team in the RMAC. In addition to two homeruns on the day (one of which pulled CCU to within 1 score in the sixth inning of the first game) Michael Cavazos recorded his 200th hit in a Colorado Christian uniform with a single to left field in the final inning of the day. Doug Pavlich got in on the long ball action as well. The catcher from Golden hit two bombs in Saturday's double-header, bringing his two-year homerun total to 19.
On the mound, game one's starter Jake Logan pitched three strikeouts and allowed only 11 hits from 35 batters faced.
Following the senior leads was freshman Kyle Yanke, who connected on the first two hits of his career with a double to center field followed by a homer over the left field fence.
Despite strong showings from CCU batters, at the end of the day Mesa's offense proved too potent to stop. The Mavericks outhit Christian 40-23 as they finished the sweep.
Aaron Orr got the start in game two, and was credited with the loss - his second of the year.
With the conference season behind them, Colorado Christian prepares now for the NCCAA regional tournament. The dates and location of the tournament have yet to be announced.
April 30, 2010 - A deep and talented Mesa State team had no trouble executing against Colorado Christian University Friday, The 29-16 Mavericks controlled the entire game, scoring 27 times on 30 hits
and holding the home Cougars scoreless until Joey Younkerman was finally able to get CCU on the board in the final inning. CCU lost game one 27-1. (Boxscore)
The day started with the Colorado Christian squad recognizing their favorite professors, but then turned south when Mesa State rolled off six first-inning runs. Five pitchers saw action for the Cougars, led off by Lawson Cheek in his tenth start of the season.
CCU and Mesa will return to All Star Park Saturday to finish the series. The first game of the double-header is set for 12:00.
April 25, 2010 – Though neither game really seemed out of reach until the late innings, Metro State consistently put together scoring runs in Sunday’s doubleheader, outhitting and outscoring Colorado
Christian baseball with the help of ten doubles and five homeruns. CCU lost the 2 game series 9-2 and 13-6. (Boxscores)
The Cougars saw pitching from Lawson Cheek (L, 2-7) and Trey Stastny in the day’s opener. Though he was eventually saddled with the loss, Cheek threw six strikeouts in five innings pitched. Jake Logan (L, 4-7) started game two for CCU, combining for eight strikeouts with Aaron Orr, who relieved him in the fourth inning. Sophomore Jeff Ross completed the game for Christian.
Colorado Christian only connected on sixteen hits in Sunday’s twinbill, a stark contrast to Metro’s 35. Unable to match the Roadrunners momentum on offense, CCU lost their seventh and eighth games in a row.
The Cougars wrap up the regular season with a three-game series against Mesa State next weekend. The first game starts at 2:30 on Friday.
April 18, 2010 – The number eight-ranked New Mexico Highlands Cowboys completed their sweep of CCU baseball Sunday, though a ninth inning surge from the Cougars in game one almost gave the underdogs the win.
Lawson Cheek continued his strength at the mound in Sunday’s opener, limiting Highlands’ normally high-powered offense by allowing only one earned run and throwing three strikeouts in eight innings
pitched. Even so, the Cowboys controlled much of the game, keeping CCU off the board until the sixth inning. NMHU had held a 3-0 lead until designated hitter JL Buchanan hit a solo homer to move the score to 3-1.
Highlands answered in the seventh with an unearned run, and then scored again in the ninth. In their half of the inning, playing for their shot at the upset, the Cougars put together a scoring run that threatened the Cowboys’ 31st win of the season. Michael Cavazos led off, facing NMHU pitcher Tyler Wichmann who had just come in to relieve starter Trent Evins.
The senior from San Antonio, TX connected to left field, sending the ball out of the park and extending Christian’s hopes. After Stefan Katsampes tripled to right field, Ryan Serena hit CCU’s third homerun of the game, bringing both he and Katsampes home and closing the gap in the score to one. That’s where the momentum stopped. NMHU pitched a strikeout, giving Colorado Christian their final out of the inning and the game. The Cowboys won 5-4 (boxscore).
The final game of the series saw Highlands’ batters heat up early, and after eight runs on seven hits, CCU pitcher Trey Stastny was relieved by Aaron Orr. Down 9-1 after only two innings, the Cougars struggled to get anything done on offense, and only scored once more to finish the game.
Seve Carbajal and Stefan Katsampes led Colorado Christian, each going two for three. Carbajal also posted one run and one RBI in the 13-2 defeat (boxscore).
With the losses, Cheek and Stastny each moved to 2-6 on the season.
CCU returns to Golden at 6:00 on Wednesday to face Colorado Mines for another non-conference battle, followed by three games against Metro at All-Star on Friday and Saturday.
April 16, 2010 – Friday’s contest against an eighth-ranked New Mexico Highlands team was an uphill battle from the very first inning for Colorado Christian baseball. Down 0-6 before they had a chance to
bat, CCU found themselves chasing the Cowboys for the remainder of the day, but never coming close.
Highlands batters made easy work of CCU’s pitchers, led by Jake Logan who got the start and was saddled with the loss. He and pitchers Austin Bell, Kyle Yanke, and Brandon Anderson threw five strikeouts on the day but gave up 21 earned runs on 27 hits, including nine doubles and six home runs.
Christian’s hitters, on the other hand, did not have the same success. Despite striking out only four times, they struggled to get on base, managing only six hits and three runs. JL Buchanan hit CCU’s only homer, a solo to left field that led off the sixth inning for Colorado Christian. David McKendrick and Shawn Tichota (pinch running for Buchanan) were the only other Cougars to cross home in the 22-3 loss (boxscore).
The series continues Sunday at noon at All Star.
April 14, 2010 – Though the last meeting between Colorado Christian and Colorado School of Mines ended in a four-game sweep in CCU’s favor, Wednesday’s contest at Darden Field went a different way.
Originally scheduled for April 7 but rescheduled because of weather, the game featured two RMAC opponents battling it out in a non-conference pairing that ended in an 11-5 decision in Mines’ favor (boxscore). The loss moves CCU to 12-28 on the season.
Seve Carbajal continued his strong play at the plate, connecting on two hits on three at-bats and scoring two runs. Doug Pavlich hit the Cougars’ only long ball (a three-run homer) of the day, putting Colorado Christian on the board in the third inning, but not before the Orediggers had already scored six runs of their own. The home team scored four more times before CCU would return home on a JL Buchanan double to left center that scored Carbajal and Jimmy Martinez.
The Cougars would not do anything more on offense for the remainder of the game. Outhit 6-12, Christian also committed four errors and gave up seven earned runs.
Though senior Brandon Anderson was credited with the start and the loss, seven CCU pitchers took the mound for Colorado Christian at the same time that seven saw time for the Orediggers.
CCU returns to action Friday, hosting #9 New Mexico Highlands at All-Star Park in Lakewood. The single game is scheduled for 11 am and will be followed by a Saturday double-header in Pueblo that begins at 3:30.
April 10, 2010 – Colorado Christian University Baseball exploded for six runs in the fourth inning and another three in the ninth en route to their first-ever win over Colorado State University – Pueblo Saturday at Rawlings Field.
On the short end of a 6-1 score after three, CCU’s only score before their big fourth inning came after
doubles from Seve Carbajal (4 for 5 on the day) and Doug Pavlich resulted in a Carbajal run.
Leading off in the fourth, Joey Younkerman doubled to left field and then, after the Cougars singled their way through the lineup, followed that up with another double that scored two Christian runners.
The Thunderwolves regained the lead in the fifth after two runs put them up 8-7, but CCU batters would not be quieted. Chad Meske tied things up the following inning after a double to right field got him on base and a JL Buchanan single brought him home.
Though CSUP scored once more in the eighth, a big ninth inning for the Cougars (three runs on three hits, including a Michael Cavazos solo homerun and another Carbajal double) put Colorado Christian up 11-10 and secured the win – their first ever over Colorado State Pueblo – for the Cougars. (Boxscore)
Game two brought even more offense from both teams, and though CCU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead ( ), the home T-Wolves were up 13-4 at the close of the fourth inning. Colorado Christian needed a big inning, and Doug Pavlich responded, sending a long ball to left field and scoring three runners to move the score to 13-7. David Altman brought two more home after doubling to right field, but the Cougars would not score again. CCU lost game four of the series 13-9. (Boxscore)
Though Jeff Ross got the start in the early game, Aaron Orr was credited with the win after pitching more
than five innings and allowing only four hits. Trey Stastny took home the save for the Cougars and then got the start in the second contest. Craig Provow, Brandon Anderson and Brandon Adams pitched relief.
Colorado Christian will revisit Darden Field in Golden Wednesday to take on Colorado School of Mines in a reschedule of last week’s game cancellation.
April 9, 2010 – Lawson Cheek (2-5) threw four strikeouts and allowed only two earned runs on eight hits against 32 batters, but CCU’s offense couldn’t match the effort, as the Cougars dropped game one 2-3
and then fell in the second contest against Colorado State Pueblo 0-7. (Boxscores) Jake Logan (4-5) held the mound for Christian in game 2, and though the Thunderwolves managed 5 earned runs off three singles and two doubles, the home team only connected on 9 hits from the junior pitcher.
Game one started slow, especially for the Cougars. Featuring only six hits in the first three innings, CSUP was the first to get on the board when, in the third inning, they took advantage of a CCU error that scored one runner. One inning later, the Thunderwolves scored three more times, advancing the score to 4-0.
Neither team would score again until the seventh, when after Colorado Christian’s Seve Carbajal singled to right field, Joey Younkerman brought him home and then crossed the platter himself after nailing a triple and then scoring on a CSUP error. It was all the scoring CCU would be able to muster, however, despite a strong effort in the ninth that left two Christian runners on base after the third out.
The Cougar offense slowed down even more in the second contest. Though Carbajal and Younkerman connected again for Colorado Christian, it would be the only two hits of the game. CSU Pueblo put together three scoring innings to secure the win and take the advantage in the series.
Games three and four will complete the series, and are scheduled to take place Saturday at 1:00 pm.
April 2, 2010 – Just one day after CCU batters helped the Cougars to their first win over Regis University, things changed dramatically for the suddenly lethargic offense. Outhit 35-15, Christian hitters only accounted for 9 runs on the day.
The Regis offense, on the other hand, seemed difficult to stop. Aggressive with the bat, the Rangers
crossed home 35 times in Friday’s doubleheader, notching 10 doubles, 3 triples, and 3 homeruns. While CCU got doubles from Doug Pavlich (game 1) and JL Buchanan (game 2), and benefited from a solo homerun from Pavlich in the early contest, they could not match Regis’ potency, and fell in the 2 Good Friday games 18-5 and 17-5. (Boxscores)
Cougar pitcher Lawson Cheek started the day with a prayer on the announcer’s microphone, giving both teams and the games’ fans the opportunity to reflect on the importance of the day and the meaning of the coming Easter weekend. The Regis offense started things immediately afterward, scoring 6 runs on 4 hits and 2 CCU errors in the first inning. They scored twice more in the 4th, while Christian hitters struggled to find their groove until a Buchanan single to the short stop (also in the 4th) marked the home team’s first hit of the day. The next 4 Cougar batters followed with singles of their own (eventually bringing home 3 runners), and Pavlich connected on his solo homer to left center field in the fifth, moving the game to an 8-4 score by the top of the 5th.
Regis took control of the game from there, scoring once in the sixth and then blowing the lid off the game in the ninth with 8 runs on 8 hits.
Jeff Ross was saddled with the loss for the Cougars after facing 24 batters and giving up 5 earned runs in 3 innings of play.
Game 2 played out in a similar fashion, with the visiting team taking the first 4 scores of the game. CCU got only 6 hits in the contest (from 6 different batters), including a Buchanan double to center field in the first. 5 runs were no match for Regis’ 17 – the Rangers scored in all but 2 innings in the 7 inning affair.
Stastny got the start and the loss for Colorado Christian, whose pitchers allowed 13 earned runs on 16 hits.
CCU travels back to Pueblo next weekend for a 4 game series at Colorado State – Pueblo, but not before returning to Darden Field in Golden for a non-conference match-up against Colorado Mines. The Wednesday contest is slated to start at 6 pm.
April 1, 2010 – It took a couple of games, but Colorado Christian bats came alive in RMAC action Thursday, exploding for 12 hits in 7 innings against Regis University in the series’ second contest. In the 2 games leading up to the 15-11 CCU win, however, Cougar batters struggled to connect.
Tuesday saw Colorado Christian at Air Force for their second game of the year against the Division I
Falcons. Though the Cougar squad hung around for much of the contest, consistent offense had the Falcons on the board in every inning – including 6 runs in the seventh. The 8 Cougar pitchers that saw action in the 25-7 affair allowed 23 earned runs on 26 hits, while CCU’s batters connected on only 10. (Boxscore)
The 3:00 game on Thursday paired 2 teams in their second battle of the year (Regis won the first 12-6). Solo homeruns accounted for all of the scoring in the first 7 innings (CCU with 1 from Seve Carbajal, and Regis with 3 from Patrick Farrell), until a Farrell double and a critical Cougar error scored 2 Ranger runners, putting the score at 6-1. Neither team would score again.
Lawson Cheek pitched the complete game for CCU, and allowing just 4 earned runs on 12 hits. CCU lost 6-1. (Boxscore)
Jake Logan (W, 4-4) got the start on the mound in game 2. After throwing 3 strike outs and allowing 8 hits, Aaron Orr came in for relief and held the Rangers off, giving up only 2 hits and preventing any Regis hitters from collecting any earned runs and earning the save.
After 3 quick Ranger outs in the first, Doug Pavlich set the pace for an aggressive CCU offensive attack with a double to left field. He and Ryan Serena scored immediately afterward, Serena on a wild pitch and Pavlich on a Buchanan single to left. A Chad Meske single brought Buchanan home, and after Carbajal crossed home on a passed ball, Christian was up 4-0.
The Cougar momentum continued in the second, when after making quick work of 3 Regis batters, CCU scored 6 more times, including 2 on a Pavlich homer to center field.
Regis got on the board in a big way in the 4th, but not after CCU had already scored 10 runs on 9 hits.
With the help of a Zach Blakely grand slam and a 3-run homer from Farrell, the Rangers rattled off 9 fourth inning runs. They would only score twice more – in the fifth – and it wouldn’t be enough to match CCU’s heat. The Cougars put together a solid fourth inning showing of their own, when, after Carbajal scored on an RU error, Pavlich cranked his second homerun of the day, scoring 3 CCU runners and advancing the score to 14-9. David McKendrick would score the final run of the night, securing the 15-11 win for the Cougars. (Boxscore)
The victory advances Colorado Christian to 5-12 in RMAC play. CCU returns to Darden Field in Golden to finish up the Regis series with a doubleheader scheduled for noon on Friday.
March 28, 2010 – CCU designated hitter JL Buchanan was on fire at the plate today, exploding for 4 hits on 5 at-bats and knocking a 3-run homer past the fences in the seventh inning to give CCU a cushioned lead they would need down the stretch. Despite being outhit 13-12, the Cougars held on to finish off
Mines in the final game of the series. (Boxscore) The 10-20 squad played solid all weekend, sending 38 runners past home and allowing only 16 earned Mines runs.
For the fourth straight game, CCU got on top first, scoring twice in the first off aggressive hitting. The host Orediggers came back with runs of their own in the first and second innings, and, despite a Michael Cavazos triple in the sixth that eventually had him score, the teams remained tied until the seventh inning.
That’s when Buchanan came up big. With Doug Pavlich and Cavazos on bases, Buchanan cranked the pitch from Tom Harris to left field, scoring 3 and moving the scoreboard to 7-3. 2 more runs came in the eighth, when Cavazos singled up the middle after 3 walks to score Chad Meske and Seve Carbajal.
Though Mines batters accounted for 4 more scores, including 2 that threatened in the final inning of the game, CCU’s offensive damage had already been done. The Cougars won their fourth straight 9-7.
Christian pitchers Jeff Ross and Craig Provow did the work on the mound, with the win going to Ross. The Highlands Ranch native allowed only 3 earned runs on 9 hits from 36 batters and accounted for 3 of CCU’s 4 strikeouts thrown.
Colorado Christian will spend their spring break working – the Cougars travel back to Air Force Academy for a Tuesday rematch, and host Regis at Colorado School of Mines in Golden on Thursday (3 pm) and Friday (12 pm).
March 27, 2010 – CCU juniors Trey Stastny (2-3) and Jake Logan (3-4) had their way with Mines batters Saturday, each pitching complete games and giving up only 3 earned runs (2, 1) and 16 hits (8 apiece)
against 65 batters faced in doubleheader action at Runyon Field. The pitchers led the way for the Cougars, who swept the day’s action with 8-6 and 4-3 wins over the host Orediggers. (Boxscores)
Sophomore David McKendrick made an early statement, opening the game with a double to left field. The Villa Park, IL native then scored when, after stealing third, he crossed home thanks to a Michael Cavazos single to the short stop. Mines matched the scoring effort immediately afterward, but JL Buchanan broke the tie in the third, rocking a 3-run homer to give CCU a 4-1 advantage. The Cougars stayed in control in the next inning, as Doug Pavlich and Cavazos singles scored Meske and McKendrick. Though Mines threatened in the fifth, scoring 5 runs off 3 hits and 2 Cougar errors, 2 CCU runs in the final 2 innings solidified the 8-6 Christian win.
A scoreless affair until the fourth inning, game 2 saw the Cougars score first again when doubles from Pavlich and Buchanan resulted in a run and put the visiting team up 1-0. Seve Carbajal crossed home in the 5th to advance the Cougar score to 2.
Mines scored 2 of their own that same inning to tie the game, but 2 CCU runs (Pavlich and Buchanan homers) to Mines’ 1 set the deciding score at 4-3.
The wins put Colorado Christian within one game of a weekend sweep, and advance the Cougars to 9-20 on the year. Both teams return to Runyon tomorrow for the final contest of the series.
March 26, 2010 – The past 30 days have been tough for CCU Baseball. Cold weather, snow storms, game cancellations, days on the bus, and losses all take their toll. None of that mattered today, however,
as the Cougars – playing a road game at their second home – beat the Orediggers of Colorado Mines in a 16-12 decision at Runyon Field. Led by outfielder Chris Guyer and pitcher Lawson Cheek, Colorado Christian outhit and out-pitched their rivals from Golden, controlling almost every inning from the first pitch and taking the first game of the 4 game series. (Boxscore)
Doug Pavlich got things going in the first inning after an impressive triple to left field that landed him on 3rd and had him crossing home on the next at bat when Michael Cavazos singled to left. Mines could do nothing to answer, and after 3 quick outs, the Cougars were back up, poised to extend their lead.
Extend they did. David Altman, the first batter of the inning, hammered another ball to the left field - this time sending it out of the park. The momentum continued to roll when, after reaching first on a bunt, Chris Guyer stole 2nd. By the time the inning was over, CCU had scored twice more, taking advantage of Mines errors.
The game took on a familiar feel in the second, with Mines only able to muster 1 hit and CCU crossing home 3 more times after doubles from Guyer and Chad Meske. Their comfortable 7-0 lead would be anything but by the time the 3rd inning ended, however – Mines batters finally responded, coming alive for 9 runs on 9 hits.
CCU scored again in the 4th, but it wasn’t until the 7th that the game-deciding damage was done. Including a 2 run homer from Pavlich and another from Guyer that brought 3 runners home, CCU connected on 7 balls and crossed home 8 more times. Despite 2 more Oredigger runs, Colorado Christian ended the game with the 16-12 advantage.
Lawson Cheek impressed in only his 4th start of the season, earning his 2nd win after giving up only 14 hits from 33 batters faced. The senior from Knoxville, TN threw 4 strikeouts before being relieved by sophomore Aaron Orr, who got in on the action with 5 hits on 16 batters, 0 walks and 2 Ks.
Though a double-header was scheduled, game 2 was rained out and moved to Sunday. If weather allows, CCU will play the next 2 seven-inning games beginning at 1 pm on Saturday.
March 24, 2010 - The CCU-Colorado School of Mines series that was scheduled to be played in Golden Friday and Saturday has been moved to Runyon Field in Pueblo. Tuesday's heavy-hitting storm brought
wet snow to the Denver Metro area that will not likely be gone from fields by the weekend.
The double-header action will begin at 4:00 pm on Friday and 3:00 pm on Saturday, and will kick off a busy pre-spring break week for the squad, who heads back to Colorado Springs for a rematch against Air Force on Tuesday, followed by a home series against Regis. Originally scheduled for Friday and Saturday, the Regis games have been moved to Thursday-Friday to accomodate Easter weekend plans.
March 23, 2010 – It’s been a tough couple of days for CCU Baseball, who welcomed spring with a four-game home stance against the University of Nebraska-Kearney. Originally scheduled for Friday-Saturday, the series was moved to Sunday-Monday after a winter-closing storm made fields in Denver
and Pueblo unplayable. Hoping the weekend would bring the first RMAC win of the still-young season, the Cougars were disappointed after tough Kearney pitching kept their scoring opportunities at a minimum and postponed that first conference win for another day. (Boxscores)
Sunday’s games at Runyon Field were regrettably lopsided. Though scorekeepers stayed busy, it wasn’t on account of the home Cougars. On a day when 34 runs were scored, CCU batters only accounted for 2 of them, falling victim to tough UNK pitchers who limited Christian to a mere 13 hits in 2 games (-41). Equally as hot, Loper hitters turned pitches into runs all day, un-phased by any balls tossed their way by starting Cougar pitchers Aaron Orr and Jeff Ross.
Day 2 brought spring weather and lifted spirits, especially in the second contest. In their first showing at All-Star, CCU quickly put a 17-3 game 3 decision behind them and mounted a strong defensive showing in the series’ last game. Strong on the mound, Jake Logan held Kearney off for 7 innings, while CCU
batters put up a strong fourth inning effort that had an energized squad – in front of an energized crowd – up for the first time on the weekend. 3 straight singles from Ryan Serena, Doug Pavlich, and JL Buchanan eventually led to an RBI that tied the game at 1 and set the Cougars up for a long inning that saw 2 more Christian runners (Serena and Buchanan) score after 4 CCU hits.
|
Colorado Christian held their narrow lead until the top of the seventh, when Kearney scored a tying run that would force extra innings. The scoreboard rested at 3-3 through the eighth, until the visiting team connected on 2 big hits that led to 4 Loper runs and a 7-3 decision.
Though it’s been just over a month since their last win, CCU flashed a grit and personality in game 4 that evidences potential for a big 2010 turn around. The Cougars return to play Friday against cross-town foe Colorado Mines. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 3, and will resume Saturday at noon.
March 13, 2010 – 5-time Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Champions Mesa State College made
quick work of CCU Baseball today in Grand Junction, scoring 28 runs to CCU’s 2, and outhitting Christian batters 32-10 in the final 2 games of the conference series.
It was another tough day for CCU starters, who allowed runs in bunches all day. Their relief fared no better, as the Mavericks pounded home 10 more runs against Colorado Christian’s back-ups.
The Cougar offense connected on 10 hits in the day’s opener but was unable to match Mesa’s potent attack. In game 2, senior pitcher Chris Shea pitched a 3-hitter gem, shutting down CCU hitters to earn the shutout. Colorado Christian fell 12-2 and 16-0. (Boxscores)
The Cougars return home to face Nebraska-Kearney in a double-header scheduled for Friday and Saturday at All-Star Park.
March 12, 2010 – With 19 games gone in the 2010 season, Colorado Christian University has yet to play an inning of baseball at All-Star Park. Instead, the well-traveled team has logged over 3,000 miles,
playing in parks in Texas, New Mexico, Pueblo, and today, Grand Junction. Unfortunately, with a 13-6 loss at Mesa State today, CCU sits at 1-11 when the Cougars are the visitor on the scoreboard.
Jake Logan got things going for Christian on a chilly night game – their first one under the lights this season. Throwing 4 innings, the junior pitcher from Paola, KS came out strong in the 1st, but couldn’t do much to stop Mesa State bursts in the 2nd and 3rd inning that accounted for 11 early runs. Lawson Cheek stepped up in relief, throwing the remaining 4 innings for CCU and allowing only 2 hits.
Colorado Christian’s bats stayed relatively quiet until the 4th inning, when J.L. Buchanan, Chris Guyer, and David Altman delivered a single and 2 doubles . The hits led to 3 Cougar runs, advancing the score to 11-4, Mesa. It would be the biggest scoring inning of the day for CCU. In the final 5 innings, Christian would only cross home 2 more times, forcing the road team to settle for a 13-6 loss to last year’s RMAC Champs. (Boxscore)
The Cougars complete their series with the Mavericks in a doubleheader scheduled for tomorrow before returning home to play their first game of the year at All-Star.
March 10, 2010 – The Colorado Christian batters had no trouble connecting on balls tossed their way from Regis pitchers Wednesday. The Cougars out-hit the Rangers 18-11 in the last minute non-
conference game, but were unable to turn those hits into enough runs to stop a 9 game skid that includes losses to nationally-ranked New Mexico Highlands and Division I Air Force.
The contest opened with 3 Colorado Christian singles, including a J.L. Buchanan shot to left field that scored a waiting Ryan Serena. It would be Christian’s only lead of the day. Regis brought 2 runners home that same inning, and then scored again after CCU was unable to muster any response in the 2nd.
It wasn’t until the 3rd inning - when another Buchanan single scored Chad Meske - that CCU would get back on the scoreboard. The 4th inning brought 2 more runs (David McKendrick & Meske), but Regis continued to answer. After scoring 6 runners and stranding 14, the Cougars lost the cross-town dual 12-6. (Boxscore)
Austin Bell (L,0-1) gave up 7 hits on 17 batters faced in the first 3 innings for Colorado Christian. The Stafford, VA native threw 1 strike-out and walked 2 batters before being relieved by Cougar pitchers Lawson Cheek, Craig Provow, Jeff Ross, Aaron Orr, and Trey Stastny, who each threw 1 inning for the visiting team.
CCU hits the road in their return to conference action, traveling to Grand Junction to take on Mesa State in a Friday-Saturday series. The Cougars return home the following weekend to square up against Nebraska-Kearney. If the weather cooperates, it will be the first series in their home park in 2010.
March 6, 2010 – It was a tough weekend of baseball for Colorado Christian University. In their second series of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play, the Cougars made the short trip to Denver to take on the Roadrunners of Metro State College. From the first game of the series things looked bleak for the
visiting team, who quickly found themselves down by double-digit runs by the time 2 innings had passed. It continued that way for the rest of the game, and though CCU collected 12 runs on 16 hits, they were outhit and outscored almost double (boxscore).
Saturday’s first game had the Cougars competing in the end, thanks in part to a solo homerun from Doug Pavlich and a Michael Cavazos run off a Roadrunner error, but CCU was left without enough innings to narrow a 5 point Metro lead. CCU lost 9-4 (boxscore). With little momentum built going into the final contest of the series, Christian was unable to stop the fast-scoring Roadrunners, and by the time the game was over they found themselves on the losing end of a 19-5 decision (boxscore).
Jake Logan (2-3), Jeff Ross (1-4), and Craig Provow (1-2) were saddled with the losses for CCU, allowing 31 hits in 9.3 combined innings. Cougar hitters connected on 33 hits on the weekend, even outhitting Metro State in the second game, but found themselves unable to produce against a tough MSCD defense.
The losses move CCU to 6-12 on the season and 0-6 in RMAC play, and leave the Cougars with a bitter taste in their mouth going to Mesa State next weekend. A 3 game series is set for Friday and Saturday in Grand Junction.
March 2, 2010 – The Colorado Christian Baseball team got off to a good start Tuesday, taking an early 1-0 lead over Division I opponent Air Force, but couldn’t sustain any momentum on the mound or behind
the plate to orchestrate an upset over the Falcons.
Jake Logan (2-2) got the start for the visiting team, pitching 2 solid innings of shutout baseball. 7 pitchers saw action in the 9 inning affair. Jeff Ross (L, 1-2) was saddled with the loss.
Though there aren’t many bright spots in a 15-5 loss, senior Chris Guyer provided some. The Highlands Ranch native went 3 for 4 (including 1 homer), scored twice and had 1 RBI. Doug Pavlich added 2 hits on 4 at bats, hit the only other homerun for the Cougars, scored once and brought 1 runner home.
CCU led through 2 innings, but Christian’s pitchers were roughed up in the 3rd and 5th, giving up 11 runs (6 in the 3rd and a 5 spot in the 5th).
At the end of the day, Air Force outhit the Cougars 20-10.
Colorado Christian returns to RMAC play this weekend, traveling to Metro State for 3 games of action on Friday and Saturday.
February 27, 2010 – Colorado Christian had a season-high 7 homeruns Saturday (5 of them in game 1 from Michael Cavazos, JL Buchanan (2), Doug Pavlich, and Chad Meske), but couldn’t stop a lethal New Mexico Highlands offense that ended up scoring 6 more runs than the Cougars on the day.
Saturday's first game featured pitching from Craig Provow (1-1). The freshman from Naperville, IL
allowed 7 earned runs on 8 hits in 4 innings. Lawson Cheek relieved him in the 4th, giving up the same number of runs and hits in 2 innings of work.
CCU found themselves down early, trailing the Cowboys 5-2 before rallying to tie the score in the top of the 4th. A Cavazos single followed by a Chris Guyer double preceded a double from David Altman that scored the 2 Cougar seniors. Meske singled up the middle immediately afterward to score Altman and tie the game at 5.
From there, the Cowboys unleashed. The NMHU squad scored 10 runs in the next 4 innings to put the ballgame away. Though the game saw 5 Cougar homers, they only accounted for 6 of CCU’s 10 runs. CCU lost the early contest 15-10. (Boxscore)
The first inning of the second game of the day had CCU up 2-0 after a Pavlich double down the left field line scored Meske and a Cavazos single up the middle brought home Pavlich. NMHU answered with 2 runs of their own in the 1st after connecting on 2 hits off Cougar pitcher Jeff Ross (L, 1-2).
The Cowboys scored 5 more in the next 2 innings, but never held an insurmountable lead over the visiting CCU squad. Christian scored 1 in the 2nd, 1 in the 4th, and 2 in the 5th inning to keep the game close. A critical 2-run homer from Guyer (the first of 2) in the top of the 5th brought the Cougars to within 1 against the best team in the RMAC, but Highlands matched that in the bottom of the frame to advance the lead to 9-6.
Down by 3 in the final inning, Buchanan singled to left and Guyer homered to right field. The Cougars were within 1 run of the tie, but were unable to bring home the tying runner that waited on 1st.
“We were happy to have competed with a tough NMHU team today,” commented Coach Rob Pegg, “but a few costly errors and base-running mistakes harmed us all weekend.”
In 2 days of play, New Mexico Highlands benefited from 42 runs on 49 hits. CCU scored 25 times after 38 hits.
The 9-8 loss (boxscore) moves CCU to 6-8 and 0-3 in conference play. New Mexico Highlands advances to 9-1 and 3-0 in the RMAC.
The Cougars return to play Tuesday against the Air Force Academy Falcons.
February 26, 2009 – Chad Meske and David McKendrick were on fire at the plate, but CCU could not stop an explosive nationally-ranked New Mexico Highlands offense Friday in Las Vegas. The Cougars lost game 1 of the RMAC opening series 18-7. (Boxscore)
Jake Logan got the start for the 6-6 Cougar team, pitching 5 innings and helping his squad to an early 7-
5 lead in the 5th. Meske connected on 5 of 5 at bats, bringing home 2 CCU runners, and David Altman hit 2 for 4, but the hitting hero of the day was McKendrick.
At the plate in the 5th with bases loaded, McKendrick doubled to left center, scoring Michael Cavazos , J.L. Buchanan, and Chris Guyer. The sophomore from Villa Park, IL crossed home two at-bats later when Altman hit a single through the right side. That put the Cougars up by 2 over the #29 team in the nation.
CCU batters went silent at that point, leaving the Cowboys to score 13 more runs in the next four frames.
McKendrick went 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored on the day. Austin Bell, Brandon Anderson and Aaron Orr pitched relief for the Cougars in the final 3 innings. NMHU scored 18 runs on 20 hits. Drew Vassil (4-0) got the win for the Cowboys, pitching 7 solid innings.
CCU will finish the series at Highlands Saturday. Game 2 is scheduled for 12 pm.
February 23, 2010 - CCU Baseball coached Rob Pegg announced Tuesday that his squad will travel to Las Vegas, NM to square off against the Cowboys of New Mexico Highlands University Friday and Saturday. Though the contests were originally scheduled to be played in Denver, the teams agreed that with snow and cold Colorado temperatures, a home/away swap would be appropriate. CCU will now host NMHU on April 16 and 17.
Fans not able to make the trip to New Mexico will be able to follow the games on Twitter and B-2.
February 20, 2010 – Cougar Baseball came up short in a shortened game Saturday, and were left without the opportunity to avenge the loss in a second game after the last game of the series was
cancelled because of weather.
The first two innings were quiet ones, with pitchers (Jeff Ross, for CCU) making quick work of the offenses. Things changed in the 3rd, however, when Minnesota State Mankato erupted for 3 runs on 4 hits, 2 of them unearned. The score sat at 3-0 until the following inning, when RMAC Player of the Week Chris Guyer scored on a balk. That was the only time Christian would cross home.
Mankato stayed quiet until the final inning (7), when the Mavericks took advantage of 4 Cougar errors to advance the score to 9-1 (boxscore). CCU finished the weekend 1-2 against their Northern Sun opponent.
Colorado Christian opens conference play next weekend against New Mexico Highlands University. Though originally scheduled for Denver, the games will now be played in Las Vegas, NM.
February 19, 2010 – Though they’ve logged 2,250 miles in just 3 weeks (including 2 home series in Pueblo), it appears the Colorado Christian Baseball team is anything but road weary. Up against last year’s Northern Sun Conference Champion today, the Cougars brought some heat on an otherwise cold day. Boys of summer? The term hardly applies when, for the second week in a row, snow forced the squad south to Runyon Field in Pueblo.
The first 3 innings of the series against Minnesota State-Mankato showcased solid pitching and tight defense from both squads (only 2 hits between them, both from the Mavericks). A small crowd of fans finally saw some offensive action in the 4th, however, when MSUM’s Aaron Berner scored on a passed ball. CCU got on the board immediately afterward, as a J.L. Buchanan sac fly to center field brought Ryan Serena home. The game was tied at 1 heading into the 5th. Mankato mounted a 6-0 scoring run from there, until a Michael Cavazos walk with bases loaded ended the drought for the Cougars. Down 7-2 in the bottom of the 9th, David McKendrick gave the home team hope with a triple to right field that scored Chris Guyer.
The momentum began to roll from there. The Cougars scored again off the next batter – Joey
Younkerman (single) – and then filled up the bases with a Serena single and a Doug Pavlich walk. CCU could not capitalize with 2 outs and the tying run at the plate, however. A Cavazos ground out ended the hopes for a come-back.
Jake Logan (2-1) got the start and was credited with the 7-4 loss for Christian (boxscore). Aaron Orr and Todd Souza each pitched one inning in relief.
Craig Provow got things going for the Cougars in the second game (boxscore), though it was CCU’s hitters that did the damage. After a Pavlich double to right field in the 1st brought Serena home, Colorado Christian took an early 1-0 lead. Mankato answered with an RBI off a single the following inning, tying the game at 1.
Despite the lone Maverick score, it was all CCU in that inning. 6 hits (McKendrick, Younkerman, David Altman, Serena, and a Pavlich homer) meant 6 runs, and gave the Cougars an impressive 7-1 second inning lead. Not to be outdone, Mankato tied the game in the third, scoring 6 on 5 hits.
The next inning and a half went fast, with no player reaching a base. MSUM ended that in the top of the 5th with another run. Down 7-6 in the bottom of the 5th, CCU’s Pavlich singled to 3rd. That hit set-up McKendrick who, 4 batters later, reached on a fielder’s choice to bring Pavlich home. A big Altman single to center field scored McKendrick and Cavazos, and put Christian up 10-8. It was all the offense the Cougars would need. Lawson Cheek (entered the game in the 3rd) made quick work of the Mavs to finish the game, giving himself – and the Cougars – the 10-8 win.
CCU is scheduled to return to Runyon to finish up the series – weather permitting - Saturday at 11:30 am. Fans can follow the 6-4 squad on Twitter (ccucougars).
February 13, 2010 –22 hits, 14 strikeouts, 26 runs, 6 homers, and 2 grand slams (in the same inning): that’s what Colorado Christian did to Hastings College Saturday. The Cougars wrapped up the home-
opening series with 16-4 (boxscore) and 10-1 (boxscore) wins over the Broncos, improving their record to 5-3 in just the second week of the 2010 season.
Pitchers Jeff Ross and Trey Stastny took home the wins, throwing 6 and 5 innings, respectively, and allowing only 13 hits. Chris Guyer and Brandon Adams rocked the grand slams, both in the 6th inning of the first game. Doug Pavlich, JL Buchanan, and David McKendrick accounted for the rest of the game 1 RBIs. In the series finale, Pavlich, Buchanan, and Guyer continued the homerun action, accounting for 6 of CCU’s 10 runs.
Todd Souza and Lawson Cheek pitched relief for Stastny in Saturday’s opener, while Aaron Orr relieved Ross for 1 inning in the second game.
The Cougars welcome Minnesota State-Mankato to All-Star Park next weekend. Double-headers are scheduled for noon on both Friday and Saturday.
February 13, 2010 – Though they were 105 miles from Lakewood, CCU made their home debut an impressive one Friday, defeating a visiting Hastings College team in both games of the double-header (10-5, 10-6) en route to a perfect 2-0 record at home and a 3-4 start to the 2010 season.
Snow-covered fields in Denver prevented the Cougars from opening at All-Star or Double Angel, but it didn’t bother seniors Chad Meske and Brandon Adams, who led the way for CCU with 3runs apiece in
the first game. Nor did it affect Doug Pavlich, whose homerun in the 6th inning scored 2, putting the Cougars up 9-0. No, it seems Pueblo is a home away from home for the Christian squad, who hope to continue their winning ways over the Broncos at Runyon Field Saturday.
Game 1 was a scoreless contest until the 3rd inning, when an errant Hastings pitch with bases loaded led to a Ryan Serena score. 2 more Cougar runners found the platter that inning to put the “home” team up 3-0.
So the story went for the next 3 innings – Adams and Meske put CCU up 5-0 in the 5th, and Pavlich’s homer, combined with a Serena triple, extended the lead in the 6th. By the time Hastings put together any kind of offensive effort (in the top of the 7th), it was too late.
Junior pitcher Craig Provow threw 6 innings and 6 strikeouts in the Cougar win (boxscore). Lawson Cheek, Aaron Orr, Brandon Anderson, and Kyle Yanke provided relief. Junior Jake Logan notched the game 2 win (boxscore), after throwing 4 innings. The Paola, KS native allowed 3 runs on 3 hits.
Though Hastings made the later game more interesting, it was still all CCU. Heavy hitter Pavlich followed up on a 3rd inning Mike Cavazos home-run, hitting another out of the park in the 4th to score 3. The Cougar hitters connected on 14 pitches, compared to Hastings’ 8.
Tomorrow’s double-header at Runyon is scheduled for 11 am, and kicks off a busy day for Colorado Christian fans. Follow Saturday’s baseball and basketball (varsity and JV) on B-2 and Twitter.
February 7, 2010 - CCU’s offense was unable to provide a spark that the Cougars needed to go ahead on Tarleton State in the first game of the day Sunday. The Colorado Christian team stranded runner after runner in day 2 of series, leaving 13 on base in the 1-7 decision. (Boxscore)
The host Texans jumped on top of the Cougars quickly, after a Junnior Dishmey-Perez score that put TSU up 1-0. CCU wouldn’t answer until the top of the 3rd inning, when a David McKendrick groundout to the shortstop scored Chad Meske. That 1 run was all the Cougars could muster in game 3, and it certainly wasn’t enough. Tarleton State scored 5 more times in the 3rd, and followed that up with another in the bottom of the 5th.
The loss went to CCU pitcher Trey Stastny (0-1) after 6 earned runs on 6 hits. The junior from Durango threw 3 strike-outs and walked 1 Texan.
Seniors Meske and Michael Cavazos paced the Christian offense, combining for 4 hits.
The only Cougar to score in game 1, Meske did it again in the top of the 1st inning of Sunday’s 2nd game. Doug Pavlich grounded out to bring Meske home, giving CCU an early 1-0 lead. Tarleton responded in the next inning, scoring 5 runs on Cougar pitcher Lawson Cheek. Though both offenses played an even game from there, CCU was never able to regain their early lead. They got close in the 5th, scoring 4 times – including a J.L. Buchanan homer that brought 2 runners home – to narrow the gap to 7-8, but would not score again. Tarleton State won the series with a 12-7 decision. (Boxscore)
Cheek moved to 0-2 on the young season after giving up eight runs on eight hits. Brandon Adams and Kyle Yanke pitched relief for the Cougars in the final 2 innings of the day.
Because of the recent snow, CCU hosts Hastings College in Pueblo at Runyon Field next weekend. Doubleheaders are schedule for Friday (12 pm) and Saturday (11 am).
February 6, 2010 – Despite 800 miles, a nasty snowstorm, and a Friday game cancellation, the Colorado Christian University Baseball team kicked off the 2010 season Saturday in Stephenville, TX. The Cougars took the field for the first time in 9 months against a tough Tarleton State Texan team, and spent the next 5 hours in a pitching battle that would eventually end in a split (2-3, 3-1).
“Tarleton has a good program and talented players,” remarked Coach Rob Pegg. “Our guys prepared well and were excited about the opportunity to open in Texas.”
Originally scheduled for just 7 innings, the day’s opener went long, thanks to a strong CCU showing in
the 3rd inning that tied the game at 2.
Tarleton State found the scoreboard early, when Texan junior Junnior Dishmey-Perez stole home in the 1st inning to put the home team up 1-0. An RBI in the 2nd had the Texans up by 2, but a Doug Pavlich single with 2 outs in the 3rd brought David Altman and Chad Meske home and tied the game.
The pitchers controlled most of the next 7 innings, allowing only 10 hits from either team and assuring that innings 4-9 would be scoreless. Jeff Ross, Craig Provow, and Austin Bell each pitched 3 innings for the Cougars, with Ross getting the start. Senior Lawson Cheek entered the game in the 10th, ultimately finishing the game for CCU.
Dishmey-Perez, TSU’s first batter of the inning, got on base right away. 3 hitters and 1 Christian error later, he was crossing home, giving Tarleton State the 3-2 win. (Boxscore)
CCU junior Jake Logan continued the strength at the mound in the second game of the day. The Paola, KS native pitched all 7 innings, allowing only 2 hits and 1 run in the Cougar win.
3 hits (Chris Guyer, David McKendrick, Ryan Serena) and a Texan error eventually led to 3 scores (Guyer, Michael Cavazos, McKendrick) in the 2nd inning, giving the Cougars an early 3-0 lead. Tarleton State answered back in the 3rd, advancing the score to 3-1. Logan held off TSU for the remainder of the game however, helping CCU maintain the 3-1 lead to the finish. (Boxscore)
The Cougars wrap up the series Sunday with a 9 inning game scheduled for 9:30 mountain time.

October 29, 2009 – CCU’s Gold team pull out a four game victory over an undermanned Blue squad this past week, pulling out an 11-8 win in game three, before erupting for a 21-10 victory in the final contest.
With Gold leading 4-3 after four innings in game three, Joey Younkerman connected for a three run homer to increase the Gold advantage to 7-3. A relentless Gold team tacked on four more in the sixth to increase the margin to 11-3. Pesky Blue did not go away however, and rallied for two in the eighth and two in the ninth to keep things interesting.
Trailing 8-11, Blue’s Jeff Ross hit a bases loaded blast to deep center, but Rocco Bachara tracked it down to secure the Gold victory. Blue allowed four unearned runs in the loss.
Jake Logan picked up the win for Gold, pitching five strong and giving up just three runs on four hits while striking out five.
Joey Younkerman unleashed for the three run homer while Michael Cavazos logged two hits with a run scored and two RBI’s.
Blue was paced by Stefan Katsampes, who went 3-4 with two home runs and three RBI’s.
JL Buchanan collected two hits with an RBI and two runs scored, while Brandon Adams launched a three run homer in the first inning.
David Dickens pitched a strong 2 1/3 scoreless innings giving for Blue.
Gold scored early and often in the 21-10 series finale, exploding for seven runs in the top of the second and turning the contest into a laugher from that point on. Through five innings Gold held a commanding 14-0 lead and finished with 21 runs on 21 hits.
Blue salvaged some pride near the end of the contest, putting up four spots in the sixth and seventh.
Series MVP, Trey Stastny, picked up his second win of the series, going five strong scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out 10. This marks the first time in Blue/Gold Teacup Series history that the series was not pushed to the brink. It is also the fourth time that Gold has won in five years.
Gold was highlighted by Chad Meske, who went a perfect 2-2 with three walks, four runs scored and two RBI’s.
Doug Pavlich chipped in a 3-5 showing with five RBI’s and two runs scored, including a three run homer.
Jimmy Martinez went 4-6 with three runs scored, while Matt Sullivan, David Altman (his first home run ever in his life) and Seve Carbajal all had a pair of hits in the win.

October 20, 2009 – One sure sign that fall is in the air is the return of the annual CCU Baseball Blue-Gold Series. Each year, all eyes in the state turn to local D’Evelyn High School, where the Cougars offer a brief glimpse of things to come in the spring.
Despite the overwhelming fan-fare, media blitz and all-around high expectations, the Cougars were once again able to live up to the billing and wow the packed stadium with a fantastic display of skill and excitement.
The series opener began with a 10 inning thriller, as the Blue team was able to pull out a narrow 9-5 victory over the heavily favored Gold squad.
Gold was shining early on, holding a commanding 4-1 lead after six innings. With the contest seemingly all but in the bag, Blue pulled off one of the most memorable rallies in the storied history of the series. Following a two run seventh frame which tied the contest up at five all, Blue unleashed for four runs in the top of the tenth to escape with the victory and ignite a celebration that spilled back onto the residence side of campus.
Blue was led by newcomer Shawn Tichota who went a perfect 2-2 on the contest, including a double, two runs scored and the game-winning two-run bomb in the 10th.
JL Buchanan added four RBI’s on a 3-5 showing, while Jeff Ross pitched five innings and allowed just two earned runs.
Gold was paced by Chad “B2” Meske, who exploded with a 3-5 performance, including a double off the fence in the ninth inning that fell less than a foot away from ending the game.
Jake Logan tossed five strong innings, giving up one run on three hits, while striking out six in the loss.
It was all Gold all the time in the final contest of the doubleheader, as the favorites shook off the morning setback and jumped ahead 6-0 after two short innings.
Holding a commanding six run advantage, Gold was able to coast for the remainder of the game, giving up no more than three runs in the seventh and two in the ninth to eventually cruise to the easy 7-6 blowout.
Blue had one last breath of hope in the ninth, but left the tying run on 3rd, when Gold’s David ‘Voice of Men’s Soccer’ Altman made a strong defensive play to put the contest on ice.
Trey Stastny earned the win for Gold, dominating five innings to the tune of eight strikeouts and only one run on two hits.
Joey Younkerman, collected three hits on the afternoon, while Jake Logan went 2-3 with one RBI and one run scored.
The surprise player of the series was Stephen Williams, who reached base on all three plate appearances, notching two walks and a run scoring infield single.
