March 27, 2009—A heavy spring snow converged on the Denver area Thursday afternoon, dumping up to 15 inches of snow in some locations, resulting in the cancelation of the CCU vs. Colorado Mines series.
It all began in the northwest corner of the United States early this week, as a powerful front gathered moisture and slowly began it’s descent into the Rocky Mountain region.
At the same time, a low pressure system settled in over the state, providing the perfect conditions for a second system moving up from the south. The southern front, rotating in a counterclockwise direction, combined with the northern-most system to create what some are already calling the Blizzard of 2009.
Fortunately, the southern-most parts of the storm did not extend as far as the Gulf of Mexico, which many Colorado natives recognize, would have resulted in a pipeline of moisture and a far more significant accumulative event.
Nonetheless, the snow totals will be measured in feet in some areas, and the end result is the cancelation of the highly anticipated CCU vs. Mines series.

January 14, 2009—It wasn’t the sound of a crack of a bat in the Dominican Republic. For the CCU baseball team, it was the sound of laughter, and the look of pure joy on children’s faces. That was the
inspiration that brought the team closer together and ultimately closer to God. Some of us went down to the Dominican with a thought that we were going to bring the gospel to these people, when just to our surprise it was the exact opposite. When we were faced with children that had no father, no mother and were living in an orphanage, we thought to ourselves, “What can we do to help the children in this situation?” We were never faced with this in our lifetime. We felt helpless. Then God brought a young man into our lives by the name of Israel. Israel was a boy that had so much spirit inside of his broken body, and God filled this young man with a faith far above any person I have ever met at that age. He prayed for us, and the lives of our family members. We thought we were going down there to change lives. Wow, were we mistaken. It is our lives that forever will be changed.
The fear and doubt that some of us had before going on this trip had been lifted the moment we saw these people in the sugarcane villages and how they lived. These villages were filled with three things;
houses, a church, and the outline of a baseball field. The poorest areas in the middle of this country still had baseball fields. That is taking their favorite pastime to a whole other level. It just blew my mind the happiness these kids possess with what little they had. The first village that we went to had a population of 241 people. There was a pastor there who turned out to be a hero to all of us. He was a Haitian that fled Haiti to look for a better life. He ended up becoming a pastor for numerous villages in the area. His spirit overwhelmed us. He prayed for everyone there and said that it doesn’t matter that we are white and they are black. There is no skin color in Heaven. We were all the same in God’s eyes.
In case you’re wondering, we also played a few baseball games. We played 8 games against spectacular talent. We played select teams that had players from ages of 15-18. We played against a team that was comprised of minor league players, both current and former. Finally, we played a team that was made up of 17-19 year olds on a field in the middle of the capital city, Santo Domingo. The infield was full of rocks and the bases
were not staked into the ground, but neither team minded. It was great to see the privilege on the faces of the Dominican players just to be able to play a game of baseball. Coach Pegg has taken a new philosophy. “Play like the Dominican’s, nice and loose.” We ended the trip 4-4 but to us it didn’t matter whether we won or lost it was just a great honor to play with these superior athletes. We also got a chance to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with the players after each game. At the end of each game a different player would give his testimony and how he was led to Christ. It was very powerful each and every time.
People ask us now that were back, “How was the trip?” We give stories and examples of what we did and what we saw. But for the 31 of us that were on the trip it will forever stay in our hearts because we got to experience it together. Simple words can not possibly explain how our lives will be forever changed.
