Aggressive JV Squad Comes Up Short

CCU’s JV men battled aggressively Friday in a home match-up against Brown Mackie College, but couldn’t get their offensive game going.  Despite out-rebounding the visiting Lions 37-32 and controlling 11 steals, CCU shot a chilly 35% from the field in the 58-70 loss.

CCU’s Andrew Harrison scored a team-high 16 points and Kurt Ogbewele grabbed a game-high 10 boards in the Cougar effort. 

A strong press from Brown Mackie seemed to rattle the home team, forcing 24 blue and gold turnovers, however point guard Andrew Nale stayed persistent through the pressure. The 5-10 freshman dished out 4 assists and recorded 8 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals.

BMC was led by the scoring efforts of Robbie Lewis (18) and Joshua Langford (15).

Hard Working Cougars Push Lamar to Overtime

January 19, 2010 – A disciplined men’s JV team showed off a tremendous team effort Monday, moving the ball well for open looks against an athletic squad from Lamar Community College.  The Cougars outscored the visiting Runnin’ Lopes 33-32 in the first-half, thanks to a balanced scoring effort from just about every Cougar on the floor.

First-half LCC shooting woes were remedied in the second period, paced by the inside play of Arden Dennis (15 points).  At the end of regulation, the scoreboard read 60-60.

Lamar got off to a fast start in the extra period, leaving CCU to play catch-up.  Despite hard battles in the paint and for rebounds, the Cougars were unable to maintain their momentum from regulation.  LCC won the contest 72-65. 

The JV men take to the floor again Friday, January 29.

Laramie CC Fends off Cougars for 59-55 Victory

December 3, 2009 – Laramie Community College hit some pressure free throws down the stretch to pull out a 59-55 victory (box score) over the CCU JV men’s basketball team Thursday evening in Lakewood, Colorado.

The Cougars held a 26-24 lead at the half, but fell behind by as many as 11 (34-45) in the second stanza.

Not going down without a fight, the Cougars rattled off 11 unanswered points to knot things up at 45 all with 7:25 remaining.

Each team swapped leads down the stretch, until Laramie was able to drain six free throws in the final two minutes to escape with the four point decision.

Kurt Ogbewele led the Cougar effort with 14 points and six boards, while Stephen Dennis chipped in 13 points on the evening.

Davin Anderson led Laramie with 18 points and five rebounds, including a 9-12 effort from the charity stripe.

Cougars Battle Hard, Fall Short 60-66 at Lamar

November 16, 2009 – Despite playing one of their most complete games of the young season, the Cougars dropped a narrow 60-66 decision at Lamar Community College Monday evening in Lamar, Colorado.

Dominating the action in the paint, Jesse Gessel poured in 10 points and five boards, while John VanderHoek notched 15 points in the loss.

Jonathan McGinley added 11 points from his point guard spot and downed 3-4 from beyond the arc.

Cougars Drop Dual Slate in Wyoming

November 14, 2009 – The CCU JV men’s basketball team fell to 0-3 on the season after a 58-84 setback to Central Wyoming, and a 44-67 loss at Western Wyoming.

Andrew Harrison paced the Cougars against Central Wyoming, erupting for a team-best 11 points, while connecting on 2-3 of his long distance attempts.

Josh McBeth, Stephen Dennis and Kurt Ogbewele each chipped in eight points, with Jonathan McGinley adding a game-best seven assists in the loss.

The Western Wyoming contest featured Ogbewele coming unglued for 15 points and five rebounds while shooting 6-7 from the floor.

Ryan Holocher added 12 points while hitting an efficient 4-8 from the field.

The iron proved to be unkind overall for the men, as the Cougars connected on a chilly 26% from three point range and only 42% from the free throw line.

Cougars Stumble in Season Opener at Dodge City

November 2, 2009 – The CCU JV men’s basketball team stumbled out of the gates to a 66-80 loss (box score) at Dodge City Community College Conquerors in the season opener for both teams in Dodge City, Kansas.

The Cougars trailed by only one point (35-36) at the break, but were outscored 44-31 in the second stanza en-route to the 14 point decision.

Joel Morris led the way for CCU, scoring 18 points on 5-6 shooting, while collecting seven rebounds and dishing out one assist.

Jonathan McGinley added 13 points and four assists in 31 minutes of action.

The Conquerors’ scored 25 points off of 25 CCU turnovers and shot a sizzling 61% from beyond the arc.
