Cougars Finish 13th at NCCAA Championships

Clifton SebraOctober 10, 2007—The Cougar men’s golf team completed the fall season this past Tuesday with a 13th place finish at the NCCAA National Championships in Panama City, Florida. Final Resutls

Sophomore Jon Klingensmith once again led the way for the Cougars, posting back-to-back scores of 76, to finish the event with a combined score of 152 and a 14th place overall finish.

Only two strokes behind Klingensmith was Clifton Sebra. Sebra struggled out of the gate, logging an 81 on day one, however, the freshman recovered to score a team-high 73 on the final day of action and jump up to 23rd in the overall rankings with a 154.

As a team, the men failed to find their groove in Florida. With a shot at the NCCAA National Championship on the line, the Cougars were only able to muster a team score of 321 on the first day. Bouncing back considerably on day two, the men scored a 308, but the combined total of 629 would prove to only be good enough for the 13th place finish.

Southeastern University took first place in the event, notching a team score of 597, followed by Olivet Nazarene (606) and North Greenville College(607) who rounded out the top three.

In all, men’s golf posted one of the strongest fall seasons in recent memory. The Cougars enjoyed solid outings in RMAC play, and with an equally impressive spring season, the men will be in the driver’s seat to qualify for CCU’s first-ever appearance in the NCAA Playoffs.

Blanscet, Nelson Lead Cougars to 6th at Regional Head-to-Head

Nate BlanscetSeptember 26, 2007—CCU junior Nate Blanscet and freshman Philip Nelson each tied for 15th overall, leading the Cougars to a sixth place finish at the Regional Head-to-Head at the Hastings Country Club in Hastings, Minnesota. Final Results

Despite being hampered by a severe ankle injury, Blanscet delivered his best performance of the season. Limping badly, Nate battled the pain and still managed a +13 on the event with rounds of 75, 79 and 75 (229).

Nelson logged a 75 on the first round, but like the rest of the Cougars struggled slightly during round two. As a team, the men finished with a season-worst 317 and dropped from fourth to seventh place after one day of action.

“We had a little trouble making the transition to the lower altitude. The cool, moist Minnesota air made it difficult for many of the guys to get their distances dialed in,” noted head coach Mark Hull.

Despite the setback, the men rallied for an impressive final round on day two. Paced by Nelson who bounced back to post a team-low 73, the men racked up the third best total of the day with a 298. The strong finish propelled the Cougars over Augustana College and into the sixth place finish with a +59 (308, 317, 298).

“With our strong finish on Tuesday, we were able to separate ourselves from the bottom half of the field, move up to sixth, and put ourselves in a very good position going into the Spring Regional Head-to-Head,” added Hull.

The eight best teams from the Fall and Spring Regional Head-to-Head tournaments will advance to the NCAA playoffs this May in Sonoma, California.

Cougars Continue to Impress; Place Third at RMAC #1

Philip NelsonSeptember 18, 2007—Confirming that last week’s dominance was no stroke of luck, the CCU men’s golf team put on another strong showing this week at the first official RMAC event of the fall.

While the final scores were slightly higher than last week’s finish, this week’s results were far more impressive. The men battled a much more difficult course, yet found themselves right on the heels of second place UC-Colorado Springs (892) and first place Western New Mexico (888) - who are not only conference powerhouses, but are also the first and second ranked teams in the entire region.

This week it was Philip Nelson leading the charge for the Cougars. The freshman strung together rounds of 71, 75 and 78 (224) to notch a seventh place finish in the 40-player field.

Trailing just behind Nelson was CCU sophomore Patrick Kent. Kent has proven to be Mr. Reliable so far for the Cougars this season, posting his second top-ten finish in a row with scores of 74, 77 and 75 (226) on the event.

Last week’s hero, Jon Klingensmith, delivered scores of 77 and 84 on day one, but was all business on day two when he turned in a 71, leading the team to a tournament low combined score of 295.

The sizzling Cougars now set their sights on the Regional Head-to-Head in Hastings, Minnesota, on September 24 and 25.
