Nelson, Secrest Named Honor Student Athletes for 2008-09

Philip NelsonJune 8, 2009—The Cougar Athletics Department is pleased to announce that Philip Nelson and Kim Secrest have been named CCU Honor Student Athletes for the 2008-09 academic year.

Nelson, a sophomore on the men’s golf team, helped lead the Cougars to their second-consecutive NCAA Super Regional appearance, while holding a team-fourth 77.1 stroke average and competing in seven of CCU’s eight regular season events. In the classroom, Philip holds a 3.72 in Business Administration.

Secrest recently capped a stellar senior season by helping the Kim Secrestwomen’s soccer team to their first-ever berth in the NCCAA National Tournament. An NCCAA All-American, a four year starter and one of the top defenders in the history of the program, Secrest graduated this spring with a stellar 3.97 GPA in Psychology.

Administrators from each of the 14 RMAC institutions chose a male and female athlete as their honorees for RMAC Honor Student Athletes. To be eligible for the award, individuals must be an athlete in one of the conference sponsored championship sports; carry at least a 3.20 GPA; be a starter or key reserve; be of good character and must have participated at the member institution for two (2) or more seasons. True freshman and first year transfers are not eligible for this award.

Nelson, Lauer Named Second Team All-Academic

Philip NelsonMay 14, 2009—The CCU Athletics Department is pleased to announce that Philip Nelson and Jessica Lauer have each earned RMAC All-Academic Second Team recognition for their outstanding performance on the course and in the classroom.

Nelson, a sophomore from Xenia, Ohio, earned a 77.1 stroke averaging during the regular season and helped lead the Cougars to their second-consecutive NCAA Super Regional appearance. In the classroom, Philip has earned an impressive 3.82 GPA in Business.

On the women’s side of the action, Lauer, a sophomore from Sturgis, South Dakota, has been a consistent top-two finisher for the Cougars over the past two years, and has tallied a strong 3.75 GPA in Biology.

To qualify for Academic All-RMAC, student athletes must have a GPA of 3.20 or better, be a starter or key reserve and completed two consecutive semesters at their current institution. RMAC Sports Information Directors at schools that sponsor the sport of golf selected the teams. These SID’s took into account the student-athlete’s work in the classroom as well as on the golf course.

Cougars Finish 15th at NCAA Regionals

Jon KlingensmithMay 6, 2009—The CCU men’s golf team capped another strong season with a 15th place overall finish at the NCAA Super Regionals this past week in Lincoln, Nebraska. Final Results

The men logged a combined team score of 917 (300, 314, 303, +65) to finish just one stroke behind 14th place Hawaii-Hilo.

Jon Klingensmith racked up a team-best 227 (75, 76, 76, +14), while earning a 36th place overall finish.

Not far behind was Patrick Kent, who ranked 41st overall on the leader board by the end of the three round extravaganza, tallying a 228 (+15) which included a Cougar-best 72 in the final round.

The overall tournament championship went to RMAC rival UC-Colorado Springs, who put together an 863 (289, 290, 284, +11) to edge out second place CSU-Stanislaus by three strokes.

Cougars Looking Strong at NCAA Super Regionals

Philip NelsonMay 5, 2009—The CCU men’s golf team wasted no time proving they belong in their second-straight NCAA Super Regional, as the Cougars enter day-two ranked a strong seventh out of 20 teams.

The men finished the first two rounds at 300 (+16) and are led by Philip Nelson who put together back-to-back rounds of 73 (+2). Nelson is currently tied for 13th in the 108 player field heading into the second day of competition.

Sonoma State leads the tournament at an even 204, while RMAC rival UC-Colorado Springs is currently in second place with a 289 (+5) stroke total.

The top five teams from the Central/West Region will advance to the national competition on May 19-22 in Blaine, Washington.

Cougars Earn Second-Consecutive NCAA Bid

Cougar GolfApril 27, 2009—The CCU Athletics Department is pleased to announce that the men’s golf program has earned their second-straight invite to the NCAA Central / West Regionals which will be held on May 4-6 at the Wilderness Ridge Golf Club in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The men finished the 2008-09 season ranked a program-best sixth in the region behind UC-Colorado Springs, Western New Mexico, Fort Lewis, Minnesota-Mankato and Saint Cloud State.

Finishing the spring season on a high-note, the men took first place at the Bob Writz Invitational on April 5-6, before landing fourth place at RMAC Head-to-Head #3 and a strong sixth place finish at RMAC #4 this past week in Phoenix, Arizona.

The Cougars are led by super sophomore Jon Klingensmith, who has posted a team-best 75.76 stroke average for the year, while earning a first place finish with co-tournament champ Patrick Kent at the Bob Writz Invite. For their efforts, the two shared honors as NCCAA Players of the Week, while Kent was named RMAC Golfer of the Week on April 9.

Following the regional competition, the top five teams and the top two individuals not with a team will advance to the NCAA finals on May 19-22 at Loomis Trail Golf Club in Blaine, Washington.

The regional invite also marks the first time in CCU history that a team has earned back-to-back appearances in the NCAA national tournament.

Cougars Place Sixth at RMAC #4

Brandon HystadApril 22, 2009—The CCU men’s golf team finished sixth out of 16 teams in the final RMAC Head-to-Head of the year this past week at the Sundance Golf Club in Buckeye, Arizona. Final Results

Brandon Hystad led the way for CCU with a combined tally of 231 (77, 75, 79), while finishing tied for 18th place in the 75 player field.

Only two strokes behind was Jon Klingensmith, who logged a 233 (78, 82, 73) and finished tied for 22nd overall.

As a team, CCU tied with Fort Lewis College for sixth place among 15 schools. The Cougars totaled a 927 (311, 306, 310) over three rounds, and fell just one stroke short of fifth place Nebraska-Kearney (314, 309, 303 – 926).

The tourney title went to UC-Colorado Springs, as the Mountain Lions finished with a 900 (306, 296, 298) and barely edged out second place Western New Mexico, who turned in a combined tally of 901 (305, 301, 295).

Kent, Klingensmith named NCCAA Golfers of the Week

NCCAAApril 16, 2009--Patrick Kent and Jon Klingensmith, have been named NCCAA Co-Golfers of the week for their stellar performance at the Bob Writz Invitational last week.

Kent (73, 68) and Klingensmith (70, 71) tied for first place overall, shot a combined 141 over the two round event and were the only two players to finish under par (-2).

The strong performance by the dynamic duo propelled the Cougars to an overall first place finish in an elite seven team field.

Cougars Impress with Fourth Place Finish at RMAC #3

Patrick KentApril 14, 2009—The CCU men’s golf team remained in the hunt for a second consecutive NCAA post-season berth, pulling out an impressive fourth place finish at the RMAC Head-to-Head #3 this past week at the Broadmoor Golf Club in Colorado Springs. Final Stats

Patrick Kent paced the Cougars with an 11th place overall finish, while turning in back-to-back scores of 76 over two rounds.

Jon Klingensmith sputtered out of the gates with an 82 in the first round, before rebounding to capture a CCU-best 73 in the second session.

Standing at sixth overall after the first day of action, the Cougars staged a strong day-two rally, leaping in front of Air Force and Colorado Mines with an impressive final round of 303.

CCU finished a with a team total of 621 (318, 303), a mere five strokes behind third place CSU-Pueblo.

Tournament host, UC-Colorado Springs, claimed honors as tournament champ, with a combined tally of 591 (294, 297), a full 10 strokes in front of second place Ft. Lewis.

The men wrap up the regular season in the final RMAC event of the season on April 20, 21 in sunny Phoenix, Arizona.

Kent Named RMAC Player of the Week

Patrick KentApril 9, 2009—The CCU Athletic Department is pleased to announce that Patrick Kent (Jr., Tukwila, WA) has been named RMAC Men’s Golfer of the Week.

Kent won his first event of the year, tying for first place with teammate Jon Klingensmith and finishing an impressive two under par with a combined total of 141 (73, 68) over the two-round Colorado School of Mines Bob Witz Invitational.

Patrick capped his strong performance with a tournament-best 68 during the second round on the par-72 course and paced the Cougars to a first place overall finish in the seven team field.

Cougars Take Team Title at Bob Writz Invitational

Klingensmith and KentApril 7, 2009—The CCU men’s golf team knocked off the winter rust in impressive fashion this past week, earning first place in the Bob Writz Invitational hosted by Colorado Mines at Fox Hollow Golf Course in Lakewood, Colorado. Final Results

Patrick Kent (73, 68; -2) and Jon Klingensmith (70, 71) led the way for the Cougars, tying for a first place finish and completing the two round event as the only players to finish under par.
 
The Cougars held a five-stroke lead over Regis after Monday’s opening round of play and concluded the event with a two-round total of 577 (+5) to finish a full 13 strokes ahead of the second-place Rangers (590; +18). 
 
The 43-man field played a par 71 course on Monday followed by a par 72 course on Tuesday (both at Fox Hollow Golf Course).  Sunday’s initial round, which was scheduled to be played at Bear Creek Golf Club (par 72) in Lakewood, was canceled due to snow and poor playing conditions.

With an important first place finish under their belt, the Cougars are back in action at the RMAC #3 event on April 13th and 14th, at The Broadmoor Golf Club in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Cougars Nab Ninth at Mustang Invite; Kent Sinks Hole-in-One

Patrick KentMarch 18, 2009—Playing in their first tournament of the spring, the CCU men’s golf team pulled out a ninth place finish among a field of top-flight competitors at the Mustang Invite in Albuquerque, NM.  The spring opener was highlighted by a Patrick Kent hole-in-one on what is widely considered the most difficult par 3 in New Mexico (260 yards with a 3 wood). Kent, a junior from Tukwila, Washington, paced the Cougars with a two under-par 70 in the second round and finished the competition ranked 21st overall with a combined total of 225 (80, 70, 75).

Not far behind was Philip Nelson, who turned in a 76, 75 and 80 (231) over the three round event, good enough for a second place team finish and a 31st overall ranking.

As a team, the men put together rounds 316, 307 and 300 to combine for a 923, five strokes ahead of 10th place Montana State-Billings.

This year’s tournament championship went to the University of New Mexico, who led the ten-team field with an 843 (278, 281, 284), a solid 30 stroke finish over second place Central Missouri.

The Cougars are back at it on April 4-6, when they tee off in the Colorado Mines Tournament at Bear Creek and Fox Hollow Golf Club in Lakewood, CO.

Cougars Finish 10th at NCCAA Nationals

NCCAAOctober 15, 2008—The CCU men’s golf team finished 10th out of 18 teams this past week at the NCCAA National Championships in Panama City, Florida.

The Cougars finished with a combined 631 (314, 317) over both days and were led by Jon Klingensmith who finished with a 154 (74, 80).

Landon Willett placed second for the Cougars with a 155 (78, 77) and Philip Nelson came in third with a 159 (79, 80).

The Malone College Pioneers earned the tournament championship for the fourth time, firing a final round score of 302 to complete the event at 592.

The NCCAA Championships round out the fall season for the Cougar men’s golf team. CCU will be back on the links and once again vying for a spot at the NCAA Super Regionals this coming spring.

Cougar JV Places First in Three Team Tourney

Landon WillettOctober 7, 2008—The CCU men’s JV golf team finished in first place this past week, scoring an 864 (286, 298, 280)and cruising past Colorado Mines (907 – 300, 308, 299) and Denver University (941 – 320, 315, 306) in the JV Jamboree at Willis Case Golf Club in Arvada, CO.

Landon Willett logged a team-best 206 (67, 73, 66) on the par 70 course, followed by Matt Motz who scored a 213 (70, 73, 70).

Dylan Morrow finished with a 222 (75, 75, 72), slightly ahead of Karl Nugent’s score of 223 (74, 77, 72) and Dan Kohnle who finished with a 227 (75, 77, 75) over the three round event. 

Men’s Golf: Cougars Nab Eighth at RMAC #2

Landon WillettThe CCU men’s golf team finished eighth place overall with a combined score of 901 (308, 295, 298) this past week at the RMAC #2 held in beautiful Kearney, Nebraska. Final Results

Landon Willett paced the CCU effort, finishing tied for tenth place overall with a solid three-round total of 220 (76, 73, 71).

Jon Klingensmith notched a second place finish for the men, tying for 36th place in the 59 player field with a 228 total (80, 73, 75).

The Cougars battled some strong Nebraska winds for the majority of the afternoon, but still managed a second round total of 285, which was good enough for third-best in the 11 team field.

The event championship went once again to UC-Colorado Springs, who posted an impressive team total of 848 (282, 282, 284) over three rounds.

The Cougars now gear up for the all-important Regional Head-to-Head which will take place on September 28-30 in Hastings, Minnesota.

Cougars Earn Invite to NCCAA Championships

September 22, 2008—For the second straight year, the CCU men’s golf team has earned an invite to compete among the nation’s elite at the NCCAA National Championships.

The NCCAA format provides an automatic invite from last year’s top finishers. The list includes:

Spring Arbor University
Cedarville University
Southern Wesleyan University
Malone College
Dallas Baptist University
Central Baptist College

An additional nine schools will round out the invite list based on their play this fall and qualifications according to the NCCAA Championship handbook. Joining the Cougars on this list will be:

Bluefield
Mid-America Christian
Southwestern Christian
Roberts Wesleyan

This year’s event will once again be held in Panama City, Florida and will take place on October 13-14.

Cougars Log Sixth Place at RMAC #1

Jon KlingensmithSeptember 17, 2008—The CCU men’s golf team battled their way to a sixth place finish this past week at the first official RMAC meet of the year, which took place at Fox Hollow Golf Course in Lakewood, Colorado. Final Results

As a team, the Cougars turned in a combined score of 906 (299, 303, 304) on the par 72 course, just seven strokes behind fifth place finisher, Colorado State-Pueblo.

Once again it was Jon Klingensmith leading the way for CCU. Klingensmith put together a three round total of 223 (75, 76, 72) and tied for eleventh place overall in the competitive 40 player field.

Patrick Kent remained consistent, posting a 226 (78, 74, 74), good enough for a second place team finish and a 16th place overall ranking.

The tournament title went to UC-Colorado Springs, who blew away the competition with a team score of 872, a full 11 stroke lead over second place Ft. Lewis.

The Cougars are back in action next week when they travel to Kearney, Nebraska for the second RMAC event of the fall.

Cougars Finish Fifth at Fall Invite

Jon KlingensmithSeptember 10, 2008—The CCU men’s golf team landed a fifth place finish among a field of strong competition this past Tuesday at the 2008 Mines/Regis Fall Invite (par 71), which was held at Fox Hollow Golf Course in Lakewood. Final Results

Jon Klingensmith led the way for the Cougars, logging a combined score of 220 (75, 74, 71) and finishing tied for 11th place overall.

Clifton Sebra (82, 71, 73) and Patrick Kent (73, 79, 74) each finished six strokes behind Klingensmith with a 226 over the three round event, tying for 19th place out of 33 golfers.

As a team, the Cougars put together strong rounds of 300, 292, and 295 (887, +35), but failed to break out of fifth place among a group of much improved conference opponents.

The team championship went to Colorado Mines, who held a nine stroke lead over Ft. Hays State University after two rounds of play. The Orediggers concluded the event with a three-round team total of 867 (+15) to finish seven strokes ahead of second place Regis University (874, +22).

CCU now gears up for RMAC #1 which will be hosted by Regis University on September 15-16.
