Cougar Athletics Welcomes Caucutt as Head Men’s Soccer Coach

Joshua CaucuttFebruary 25, 2008—The Cougar Athletic Department is pleased to announce that Joshua Caucutt will be taking the helm of the CCU men’s soccer team for the 2008-09 season.

Caucutt joins the Cougars after spending four seasons as the head men’s and women’s soccer coach at NCAA Division III Maranatha Baptist Bible College in Watertown, Wisconsin.

Joshua earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics education at Maranatha in 1999, before completing his master’s degree in arts and counseling while with the Crusaders in 2001.

Coach Caucutt is licensed by the United State Soccer Federation, and also holds a regional, national and advanced national diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), in addition to an NSCAA state goalkeeping certificate.

With 11 years of combined coaching experience on his resume, Caucutt brings a thorough understanding of soccer strategy and technique, as well as a strong work ethic and a passion for developing student athletes.

“I am excited that Coach Caucutt is joining our athletic staff,” stated CCU Athletic Director, Darren Richie. “Caucutt will bring back the winning tradition to our men’s soccer program. His background and experience will bring accountability and discipline, and a desire to mentor and train our student-athletes to become stronger players who have a desire to honor and follow Christ both on and off the soccer field.”

Tim Lowe Earns All-RMAC Nod

Tim LoweOctober 31, 2007—The post-season awards are in and CCU senior forward Tim Lowe has been honored by opposing coaches with an All-RMAC Honorable Mention selection.

A skilled athlete and a ferocious competitor, Lowe has been with the Cougars for four seasons, and has proven to be the heart and soul of CCU men’s soccer this past year.

Joining Lowe on the 2007-08 Honorable Mention Team is junior midfielder Udobong Obetette of CSU-Pueblo.

Congratulations to Tim and the rest of the Cougars for their hard work during the 2007 campaign.   

Rangers Rout Cougars 5-0 in Season Finale

Cougar SoccerOctober 28, 2007—The Regis Rangers scored two goals in the first half and three in the second to sail to a 5-0 victory (box score) over CCU Sunday afternoon in the final game of the season for the Cougars.

The Cougars found themselves on the wrong end of a 9-1 shots on goal tally, with Taylor Shade the only Cougars able to manage a shot on the net.

CCU goal keeper, Jon Wilkins, posted four saves in the loss.

With the win, the Rangers improve to 9-4-1 in conference and the Cougars stumble to the finish line at 0-13-1.

Metro State Ousts Cougars 4-0

Paul WickOctober 26, 2007—The Metro State Roadrunners remained undefeated in conference play, downing the CCU men’s soccer team 4-0 (box score) Friday afternoon at Metro State.

The Roadrunners scored two goals per half, and were never threatened during the course of the contest, allowing only one shot on goal by Cougars speedster, Paul Wick.

CCU goalie Jon Wilkins managed five saves in the loss.

The men close out the 2007-08 season this Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. road game at Regis University.

Skyhawks Roll to 3-0 Victory over Cougars

Cougar SoccerOctober 22, 2007—The Fort Lewis College Skyhawks outshot the CCU men’s soccer team 31-3 and cruised to a 3-0 victory (box score) Monday afternoon on senior day at Colorado Christian.

Nick Kirchof thumped in the first goal of the game at 18:34 off of a Keane Hamilton assist, before Paul Sanchez tacked on one more at 40:12 to give FLC a 2-0 lead heading into the break.

Four minutes into the second half, David Barden capped off the scoring thanks to a Tom Settle assist, giving the Skyhawks their third unanswered goal of the afternoon.

Skyhawk goalie Sean Molony, snagged two saves in the shutout, while CCU’s Jon Wilkins had his hands full with 12 saves on 15 shots on goal.

With the win, Fort Lewis improves to 8-3-1 in conference, while the Cougars drop to 0-11-1 in RMAC play.

The Cougars now gear up for a road contest versus Metro State this Friday at 3:30 p.m.

Mesa Survives with 3-1 Victory at CCU

Cougar SoccerOctober 19, 2007—The Mesa State Mavericks took their first lead of the game on a penalty kick with 61:11 showing, and tacked on another eight minutes later to pull off a 3-1 comeback victory (box score) Friday afternoon at CCU.

It was a tale of two halves for the Cougar men’s soccer team. John McCulley got the Cougars rolling early as he scored the game opener only five minutes into the action off of a Jack Lennon assist to put CCU ahead 1-0. The men rode the momentum and played a nearly flawless first half to take the narrow one goal advantage into the break.

Unfortunately, the wheels fell off in the second half for the Cougars, as the Mavericks were able to control the action and ultimately set themselves up for three unanswered scores.

It all began when Mesa’s Sam Dixon zipped an unassisted shot into the top left 90 at the 58 minute mark to tie the contest up at one each.

The Mavericks added another three minutes later off of a Ben Potter penalty kick, after CCU’s Joda Hankins was called for a hand ball in the box.

Eric Anderson put the final touches on the comeback when he converted a Mitchell Reid pass into Mesa’s third unanswered goal with 69:34 on the clock.

The Cougars were led by freshman goal keeper Russ Dornisch, who racked up seven saves in the loss.

With the win, Mesa improves to 5-4-2 in conference action, while CCU falls to 0-10-1 on the year.

CCU returns to the field this Sunday, when they host the Fort Lewis Skyhawks at 3:00 p.m. 

Nine Cougars Named to the RMAC Honor Roll

Cougar SoccerOctober 18, 2007—CCU athletics is proud to announce that Cougar men’s soccer has landed a conference-high nine players on the 2007-08 RMAC All-Academic Honor Roll.

Earning a spot on this year’s list is senior forward Kyle Burget, sophomore defender Mitch Harty, as well as sophomore midfielder’s Jack Lennon and Dylan Riley.

Joining them is sophomore goalie Jon Wilkins, senior mid Mitch Wingrove, senior forward Drew Ziegler as well as the Ziolkowski brothers, Caleb and Gabe.

As a group, these athletes combined to average an amazing 3.54 GPA.

The RMAC All-Academic Honor Roll recognizes student athletes who have earned a grade point average of 3.20 or better and are a starter or key reserve on their respective teams.

Congratulations to men’s soccer and to each of these award winners for their success on the field and in the classroom.

Orediggers Overwhelm CCU 4-1

Russ DornischOctober 17, 2007—Nick Kubala scored a goal and chipped in an assist to help lead the Colorado Mines Orediggers to a 4-1 victory (box score) over the Cougars Wednesday afternoon at CCU.

Mines got on the board three times in the first half, beginning at 18:38 when John Moseley scored the game opener on a free kick. Kubala then tipped in goal number two at 30:10, before assisting Kenan Bisic on the Orediggers’ third goal at 42:50.

Mines pulled ahead 4-0 early in the second when Craig Thompson tucked an unassisted shot into the top right corner of the net.

CCU avoided the shutout thanks to a Dylan Riley power shot that found its way through the Mines D and rolled past the outreached hands of Oredigger goalie, Kevan Thurman.

The Cougars were outshot 17-5 on goal, while Mines dominated 7-0 on corner kicks this afternoon.

Freshman keeper, Russ Dornisch, spent 55 minutes in the net for the Cougars, logging 10 saves in the loss.

The Cougars now prepare to host the Mavericks of Mesa State this Friday at 1:00 p.m.

Two First Half Goals Lift UCCS over Cougars

Cougar SoccerOctober 14, 2007—Two quick first half goals by Brian Stoeber propelled the UCCS Mountain Lions to a 2-0 victory over the Cougar men’s soccer team Sunday afternoon in Colorado Springs.

Stoeber struck first at the 28:25 mark and then again with 30:01 on the clock to give the hosts all the offense they would need to walk away with the 2-0 victory.

Once again it was Cougar goalie, Jon Wilkins, who kept the men competitive, following up his 21 save effort on Friday, with a 14 save outing today.

Overall, the Cougars were out-shot 32-7, including 16 UCCS shots on goal to CCU’s 1.

The Cougars now gear up for a conference showdown with cross-town rival, Colorado Mines. The men host the Orediggers this Wednesday at 1:00 p.m.

Wilkins Heroics Leads Cougars to 1-1 tie at Pueblo

Jon WilkinsOctober 12, 2007—Cougar keeper Jon Wilkins amassed a career-high 21 saves this afternoon, leading CCU to a 1-1 tie (box score) with the CSU-Pueblo Thunderwolves in Pueblo.

Your Cougars jumped in the lead early, when Tim Starr notched his second goal of the year off of a Paul Wick assist at the 17 minute mark.

The men held the lead until just before the half when Pueblo’s Dillon Good tied things up at one each with 43:47 showing.

That would be all the offense either team would muster, as the men battled through the second half and two scoreless overtime periods for the 1-1 tie.

Pueblo managed 22 shots on goal, including nine in the overtime periods, but nothing was getting by the trusty hands of Jon Wilkins who currently leads the RMAC with 7.50 saves per game.

The Cougars look to keep the momentum alive this Sunday, when they travel to UCCS for a highly anticipated matchup with the Mountain Lions at 1:00 p.m. 

Westminster Shuts Down Cougars 4-0

Jon WilkinsOctober 5, 2007—The Westminster Griffins scored three quick goals in the first half and rolled to the 4-0 victory (box score) over the CCU Cougars Friday afternoon at Colorado Christian.

Sean Aslett scored the first two goals for the Griffins, the first coming only two minutes into the action off of a Rue Van Dyke assist.

The Cougars were only able to manage two shots on goal in the loss, while Jon Wilkins grabbed five saves in 65 minutes of action.

Next up for CCU is a trip to CSU-Pueblo on Friday October 12. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.

Yellow Jackets Swarm Cougars 5-1

September 30, 2007—The CCU men’s soccer team suffered a 5-1 loss at the hands of the Montana State-Billings Yellow Jackets Saturday afternoon in Billings, Montana.

The Cougars jumped ahead quickly, thanks to a beautiful header by Taylor Shade off of a Tim Starr corner kick at the 18 minute mark.

Taylor ShadeUnfortunately, the lead would not last long, as the Yellow Jackets tied things up at 26:28 when Justin Hoskins hammered in the first of five for MSU-B.

Billings was able to tack on two more in the first half, to take a 3-1 into the break and then chip in two more second half goals for good measure to walk away with the 5-1 win.

CCU was out-shot 12-2 on goal, with Cougar keeper, Jon Wilkins, snagging seven saves in the loss.

The men return home to face Westminster College this upcoming Friday at 3:30 p.m.

Cougars Battle, fall 4-1 to #19 Metro State

Cougar SoccerSeptember 23, 2007—The CCU men’s soccer team put up a strong fight, but ultimately succumbed 4-1 (box score) to nationally ranked Metro State Sunday afternoon at Colorado Christian.

Wynne Mason got the scoring underway for Metro five minutes into the game when he slipped in a Sam Rolph centering pass to put the Roadrunners up 1-0.

CCU knotted it all up at one apiece when Paul Wick assisted Taylor Shade for a chip in past Metro goalie Ryan Vickery at the 14:26 mark.

Eleven minutes later Metro scored what would prove to be the game winner, when Phillip Owen fired in a penalty kick to put the visitors up 2-0.

The Roadrunners would go on to tack on three more unanswered, despite some gritty play by a CCU team that occasionally threatened, but failed to convert some good shots into goals.

The loss drops the Cougars to 0-9-0 (0-7-0 RMAC), while Metro improves to 7-1-2 (5-0-2 RMAC)

Next up for the Cougars is a trip to Montana State-Billings this upcoming Saturday for a rematch with the Yellow Jackets. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Balanced Attack Lifts Regis to 5-0 Victory

Cougar SoccerSeptember 21, 2007—Five players found the net for Regis University Friday afternoon, as the Rangers put on an offensive clinic and rolled to the 5-0 shutout (box score) at Colorado Christian.

Less than two minutes into the game, Regis scored back-to-back goals within 30 seconds of one another, jumping out to a 2-0 lead before the fans had even settled in their seats.

Matt Gonzales tacked on the first goal, and then assisted on a Sterling Copeland header at the 2:28 mark.

Boasting a 2-0 lead early in the second half, Regis’ Nathan Kafer knocked in the Rangers third goal when Aaron Mejia placed a perfect center pass from 20 yards out.

Sam DePetro got in on the action with 61:30 on the clock, when he zipped home a Nathan Kafer corner kick.

Finally, Keegan Bast put on the exclamation point with nine minutes remaining by chipping in a Gonzales corner kick to give Regis the 5-0 decision.

Jon Wilkins logged four saves for CCU in the contest, while Paul wick fired two shots on goal.

The Cougars fall to 0-8-0 (0-6-0 RMAC) and are back in action this Sunday when they host Metro State at 1:00 p.m.
