Men’s Soccer Welcomes 15 Newcomers

CCU head men’s soccer coach, Joshua Caucutt has announced the completion of the roster for the 2009 season.

Cougar Men's SoccerForwards: Two freshman forwards have joined the Cougars this season. Travis Reddick from Colorado Springs Christian and Mark Sekelsky from Scottsdale Christian in Arizona hope to compete for time up front. Mark was the Co-Player of the year in his conference and is creative around the net. Coach C said that “Mark has a good soccer foundation, we will concentrate on getting his body strong enough for NCAA D2. Travis possesses a D2-ready strength and as he learns the game at this level, he has a chance to really make an impact.” A transfer player, John Smario could be a real find for the CCU men’s soccer team. Smario has been out of the game for a while, but spent time training and playing at some of the highest levels at a younger age. He is from Flowermound, TX and his previous college stint was at Roberts Wesleyan. “John Smario could be a great weapon for us. As the rust comes off his game, we are excited by his potential.” CCU also welcomes John McCulley (Ralston Valley HS, CO) back to the roster after a year off. “John has a head for the game and a powerful body. Once his fitness level returns, we expect consistent production.”

Cougar Men's SoccerMidfielders: One of the top players on a high school team that went 18-1 a year ago, Grant Terzian joins high school teammate Travis Reddick on the CCU roster. “Grant brings a high level of skill to the CCU midfield,” says Coach Caucutt. “As he adds strength and adjusts to the college game, we think he can be an impact player in the RMAC.” Morgan Wall, a transfer from Western Nebraska CC, also hopes to compete for time in the center of the field. According to Coach Caucutt, “Morgan is a veteran, he plays smart soccer under pressure and will be a good back up for our other mids who will be getting more time.” Joseph (Joda) Hankins comes back to the roster after a year off. “Joda has looked great in preseason and we are excited to see him return to college soccer in a Cougar uniform.” Joda will play an important role as a strong defensive midfielder who can also be a catalyst for the attack.

Cougar Men's SoccerDefenders: David Giralt from Kelly Walsh in Caspar, WY is a new defender for the Cougars. Giralt played for one of the strongest high school programs in Wyoming and understands winning and fundamentals. Caucutt says that “David’s fitness level if off the charts. His skill is not quite where we want it, but he should see plenty of time as a center back. I am confident that he will play his way into being an effective player.” Nathan Churan from Fairfax, VA by way of the US Navy also brings great fitness and endurance to the Cougar defense and will compete for time.

Men's SoccerGoalkeepers: The CCU men have only one returning goalkeeper, junior Russell Dornisch, so it was important to add at least two more in the off-season. Andrew Sullivan from Rapids City, SD signed early in the year and comes to college with a great work ethic and a strong background in goalkeeping fundamentals. “Sully did not play in the net during his senior year due to injury, but we are confident that he will eventually be a good college GK”, says Caucutt. Jared Jacobs, a transfer from Texas by way of Abilene Christian was a last minute addition to the CCU roster. “Jacobs kind of fell into our lap, but should see a lot of time between the pipes,” according to Caucutt. Jared was a great athlete in high school, he played football, basketball and won a state title as the starting goalkeeper for Marcus HS. Coach C said, “He really is an amazing athlete, we just need get him caught up on his soccer technique.”

The team also added several redshirt players who hope to become a big part of the roster in the future. Joshua Coker is a local product who played at Littleton High School. Coker played for the soccer team in the fall and was a member of the track team in the spring. “Josh brings great athleticism and a desire to perfect his soccer skills. We look forward to his development over the next few years.” Joshua’s father recently graduated from CCU’s Adult and Graduate Studies program. Mason Williams played at Rincon Valley Christian in Santa Rosa, California. Coach C states that “Mason will bring a great attitude to practice every day.” James Simmons from Balwin City, KS will join the CCU goalkeeper contingent and a freshman defender, Tyler Peterson, from Roseville, MN will round out the roster as a big defender who will eventually contribute on the college level.

York Sends Cougars to Early Exit in NCCAA Regional's

Russ DornischNovember 20, 2008—It was one and done for the CCU men’s soccer team in the 2008 NCCAA Regional Championships, as the York College Panthers scored two unanswered goals to pull off a 2-0 victory (box score) over the host Cougars Thursday afternoon in Lakewood, Colorado.

CCU possessed the ball for the majority of the contest, logging 10 corner kicks to York’s three and out-shooting the Panthers 9-5 on goal.

Despite plenty of CCU opportunities, it was York who pulled ahead 1-0 at the 39:02 mark, when Brendan Hanaphy snuck a penalty kick through the left corner of the net and past the outstretched hands of CCU net-minder, Russ Dornisch.

Each team battled through almost fifty more minutes of scoreless action, before Ian McEnerney blasted in an improbable goal from 30 yards out with three minutes remaining to seal the contest.

York’s Keith Manley posted nine saves in the contest, while Dornisch snagged three in the CCU loss.

Tim Flavin led the Cougars with four total shots, two of them on goal.

Harty Named Third Team All-RMAC

Mitchell HartyNovember 6, 2008—CCU’s junior defender, Mitchell Harty, has been recently selected to the 2008 All-RMAC Third Team.

Harty started all 20 games for the Cougars this season and impressed coaches and fans alike with a vast array of technical skills and an undying work ethic.

The eight head men’s soccer coaches in the RMAC chose the all-conference teams (coaches cannot vote for their own players). The first team requires three forwards, three midfielders, three defender, a goal keeper and on at-large position.

In addition to All-RMAC athletic honors, Harty’s impressive GPA of 3.31 in Business was good enough for a spot on the All-RMAC Academic Honor Roll in October.

Congratulations to Mitch Harty and to all of this year’s award winners for your dedication and hard work in the classroom and in competition. (More)...
