2008 Regional Champs!

November 22, 2008—A Samantha Dean goal eight minutes into the second half propelled the CCU women’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory (box score) over Dallas Baptist University in the NCCAA Central Region Championship game Saturday afternoon in Lakewood, Colorado.

In similar fashion to Friday’s win over Central Christian, the Cougars controlled the tempo for the majority of the first half, but failed to connect on some quality shot attempts.

Samantha DeanThe first and only goal of the game finally arrived shortly after intermission, when Dean recovered a deflected shot attempt by Jessica Smith. Standing ten yards out and on the left center of the box, she nailed a perfect shot that found its way into the right half of the net to put the Cougars in front 1-0.

Less then a minute after Dean’s score, Smith had an opportunity to put the surging ladies in front 2-0, but a wide open shot attempt on a breakaway grazed the left post, ricocheted across the front of the goal and was secured by the DBU keeper on the opposite side.

Ahead 1-0, CCU found themselves on the defensive end for the remainder of the contest. The ladies weathered five second half DBU shot attempts and eventually held on for the 1-0 victory and a spot in the NCCAA National Championships.

CCU’s Alison Cox secured four saves in the CCU win, while Haley Corbell of Dallas Baptist said no to five Cougar attempts.

The Cougars held a slight 6-4 shots on goal advantage, while each team managed three corner kicks in the contest.

Next up for CCU women’s soccer is the NCCAA National Championship Tournament which will be held in Kissimmee, Florida on December 3-6.
