How Do I Evaluate Counseling Degree Programs?

For those who are considering a counseling degree program, the ultimate desire is to help others cope with problems. Whether it’s as a drug and alcohol counselor, a family counselor or even as a marriage counselor, the desire to help others improve their lives is as much a calling as it is a career. But what should you consider when choosing an educational program? What degree will be needed to be a good counselor? What classes will you take?

The answers to those questions all tie together, and while there are some different classes you’ll take, many of them will apply to any counselor you have a desire to become. Your basic degree program will be Psychology and the basic degree you’ll graduate with is a Bachelor of Science. This brings you into the field of Psychology and enables you to get a job working in the mental health field.

If you get a Master’s degree, this will be a Master of Arts degree in Counseling. This gives you specialized knowledge in various areas which you can tailor to become whichever type of counselor you want to become. As each type of counselor has specific issues they have to deal with, having this specialized knowledge is needed.

There are different ways you can get these counseling degrees. Traditional education methods mean taking classes on campus in a classroom with a live instructor. Usually these classes are given during the day and are designed for those who are full time students. However, with today’s world, this may not be possible if you have a full time job and a family. Fortunately, there are online options that can enable you to get the BS and MA degrees when you can afford the time.

Being able to take classes at night and weekends means you can take the classes at your convenience. While there are drawbacks, most notably the fact you can’t ask questions during class, it’s a minor inconvenience at worst. The benefits of being able to take online classes far outweigh that drawback.

Take a look at your situation and the options available. This will give you the information you need to evaluate which method you take. Regardless of which counseling degree program you go through, the future you’ll be building will have all kinds of rewards.
