Many Christians can never get enough of Mary Stevenson’s 1936 text “Footprints in the Sand”. It is for good reason. Her text is poignant, thought provoking and brings an emotional reaction from many who read it. It is also very relevant for those questioning their education and career path. In case you do not remember it in full, here it is:
Footprints in the Sand
One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord. Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky. In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand. Sometimes there were two sets of footprints, at other times there was one set of footprints. This bothered me because I noticed that during the low periods of my life, when I was suffering from anguish, sorrow or defeat, I could see only one set of footprints. So I said to the Lord, “You promised me Lord, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I have noticed that during the most trying periods of my life there have only been one set of footprints in the sand. Why, when I needed you most, you have not been there for me?”
The Lord replied, “The times when you have seen only one set of footprints, is when I carried you.”
For those who are considering, or who are involved in Christ Centered Education, this is a powerful message. It can help guide you through the difficult times when you are concerned about how you will pay for your education. It can give you inspiration that your education will be rewarding for you. It can help assure you your choice is fulfilling for your family and in your relationship with Christ. It can re-emphasize that your career path is not just yours; but that of God and the people he has chosen for you to serve.
Education is challenging for all. It should not be expected to be less so for those who take a Christian approach. In fact, it may be just a little bit heavier. Just remember who is there to carry you when it is particularly difficult
Your Christ Centered Education is about the journey and the destination. Perhaps more importantly, it is about how you got there. Join us at CCU on our path to God.
