After nearly 150 years, the holiday weekend we know as Memorial Day has changed only slightly in name and function, but the spirit in which the holiday was founded lives on here at CCU and around the nation. Decoration Day, as it was first known, started in 1868 after the Civil War to serve exactly that purpose: to decorate the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers throughout the country with flowers and wreaths.
This simple act of remembrance and honor for those who had died in Civil War battles continued uninterrupted each year until World War I, when the U.S. government expanded the respectful gesture to include all service members who gave their lives during any American war. Even then, Memorial Day as we know it was not officially declared a national holiday until 1971, where it is now marked each year at Arlington National Cemetery by thousands of small American flags on soldiers’ graves.
At CCU, we honor our military members not only on this special holiday, but also on every school day as well with staff and faculty dedicated to providing our servicemembers and veterans with the military educational resources they need to succeed professionally.
Whether you’re looking for an online program that you can access anywhere, or prefer the in-class experience through the College of Adult and Graduate Studies at any of our convenient locations throughout the state, we want to make higher education accessible to the families that serve our country.
CCU offers accelerated certificate, undergraduate, and master’s degree programs to help advance the military and civilian career opportunities for our service members. We accept transferable credit hours and even offer credit for certain programs and military experience that you already have. Thanks to Military Tuition Assistance, our undergraduate and graduate classes won’t incur any out-of-pocket expenses on your part under the current government policies. Even if you aren’t seeking a degree, just pursuing your educational interests, you are still eligible for reduced tuition! Our reduced military rates work in conjunction with your GI bill and Tuition Assistance benefits to cover educational expenses for active duty military members and their dependents.
Because of our great military educational resources, we are recognized by G.I. Jobs as a military-friendly school, and even offer on-base programs at Peterson Air Force Base. So as the entire country remembers its military this Memorial Day, see how CCU can support your education in the military beyond just a single holiday.
