One of my real pet peeves is those movie, music, video game makers who spend billions of dollars each year advertising their products in order to convince people to buy them and then turn around and deny that the product has any influence on persons who model the product and do horrible things. First, I am a true believer in the adage that “I’ve never seen a young person do anything that I didn’t see an adult do first”. Actually, that’s my adage, but its true. There’s a reason toy makers and fast food makers flood Saturday morning children’s cartoon watching time with commercials peddling their wears. They are dependent on the children to see the product and then go tell Mom and Dad that they want it. It works! We all know that it works. It gets more dicey when the music demoralizes women and glorifies violence and when the violent video games end up as evidence in the murder trial of a young man obsessed with the violence who acted it out in his classroom leaving people dead in his wake. You can’t have it both ways. When the rappers say they are not responsible for the acting out because they are just singing about life and not creating a life to sing about its a cop out. What it really is is all and only about money. From the biggest movie houses, to the toy makers to to the music makers, it’s all about money. The Bible “the love of money is the root of all evil” in Timothy 6:10. More people have to challenge this hypocrosy. They may be enjoying the bounty now but sooner or later we all have do our reckoning. When you look at the Bible and what happened to the wicked leaders, their living high was short lived but nearly all of them eventually came crashing down. Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said it all when he stated, “In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies but the silence of our friends.” Time for those who know better to stand up.
