My grandparents used to have this kitchy souvenir plaque that said “Don’t Judge a Man Till You Have Walked a Mile in His Moccasins”. That simple message of putting yourself in the place of others has stuck with me over the years. Indeed. the plaque could be changed to read: “Don’t Lead a Man Till You Have Walked a Mile in His/Her Moccasins”. Empathy and servitude go hand in hand. Once you understand what those you lead are experiencing – and they know that you “get it” – it is easier to influence people.
