We continue to hear about immigration reform or laws proposed to address a law breaking person in America. The word reform indicates that something is actually wrong. According to Merriam Webster’s dictionary to reform is “to amend or improve by change of form or removal of faults or abuses”. How do the current immigration laws in America abuse people? This definition is the very heart issue between illegal immigrants, who feel they have been wronged by American law, and why so many law abiding Americans see nothing wrong with punishment against law breakers. The real issue becomes why some Americans and some members of Congress believe in the protection of lawbreakers? Habakkuk 1:4 (NIV) explains the issue this way “Therefore the law is paralyzed, and justice never prevails. The wicked hem in the righteous, so that justice is perverted.” There is no reform because the American citizen is not the one breaking the law. Why change a law to make it legal or justified to break other American laws for anyone, either legal or illegal? Is this what all the lawsuits and new laws being made to change the American way of life to accommodate lawbreakers or pervert truth? If you break the law of the land and you are rewarded for that crime, why would you ever obey the law of the land once you are a citizen of that land? Regardless what side a Christian takes in this matter of immigration, the fact that millions of people are breaking the law by being in the USA today illegally is appalling. As a Christian we are to obey the law of the land, we are not lawbreakers, so why would Christians ever support lawlessness?
