4-16-2: Licensing Programs for Educators: Elementary and Early Childhood

Adult students who have an accredited bachelor's degree and are at least 23 years of age may qualify for admission to the Licensing Program for Educators for either elementary or early childhood. The Licensing Program for Educators, scheduled in evening and weekend format, can be completed in approximately 16 months of study, including a minimum of 16 weeks of student teaching. Students in the licensing programs are able to retain their present job or homemaking responsibilities and still complete coursework requirements. The student teaching component requires a full-time day commitment for the time of the assignment. Elementary Education Licensure

Elementary Education licensure prepares students to teach kindergarten through sixth grade in Colorado. In addition to the teaching license, students in the elementary education program may earn a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction.

The Elementary licensing programs requires completion of a minimum of 93 semester hours as follows:

Professional Core (56 credits)

Coursework may be transferred from completed bachelor's degree to meet general education, liberal arts and professional core requirements according to CCU's residency requirement.

CCU and the Colorado Department of Education Elementary Licensure Requirements:

  1. Passing score on PLACE or PRAXIS II exams.
  2. Completion of a total of 93 credit hours of courses, including general education, liberal arts, and major coursework. Completion of 56 credit hours from the Elementary Education Professional Core (either at CCU or through a combination of CCU and acceptable transfer courses).
  3. A cumulative CCU grade point average of 3.0 or higher on the university's 4.0 scale.
  4. Compliance with CCU Residency requirements.
  5. Recommendation by the CCU faculty for Elementary licensure.

Early Childhood Licensure

Early Childhood Education licensure prepares students to teach preschool through third grade in Colorado. The Elementary licensing programs requires completion of a minimum of 91 semester hours as follows:
