4-8-3: Global Studies

The Global Studies major is a multi-disciplinary course of study for students intending to work or study in an international setting or as a background for involvement in ministries around the world. All students in this program complete a core curriculum that provides broad background in economics, geography, history, political science, as well as in specific regions of the world.

Students in the major are encouraged to complete a study-abroad semester. Any student who completes an approved international academic experience may petition to earn a designated specialization (for example Russian Studies, China Studies, Middle East Studies, or Latin American Studies). A specialization must be approved through the appropriate university procedures (see below).

Requirements

The Bachelor of Arts with a major in Global Studies requires a minimum of 128 semester hours, including all required biblical studies and general education courses and the following courses in the major:

Exploring World Cultures component (9)

Choose 3 courses from the following (some students may be able to meet 3 or more hours of this requirement through a study abroad experience):
GLS 385 Exploring World Cultures: Latin America (3)
GLS 386 Exploring World Cultures: Asia (3)
GLS 387 Exploring World Cultures: Africa (3)
GLS 388 Exploring World Cultures: Middle East (3)
GLS 389 Exploring World Cultures: Modern Russia (3)

A field-related elective (3)

This requirement may be met through an international academic experience, an internationally focused internship, an advanced language course, or a cognate course. All coursework used to meet this requirement must be pre-approved on a case-by-case basis by the major coordinator and other campus officials through appropriate university channels.

Specializations: An optional specialization through an approved study abroad experience (credits vary). Specializations are intended only for those students who complete an approved study abroad experience and must be approved by the major coordinator and the Dean via a Substitution Form (examples of specializations: Russian Studies Specialization, China Studies Specialization, etc.) A specialization must include a minimum of 12 semester hours of coursework and at least 6 of these hours must be in ADDITION to the 48 hours required for the major.

4-8-15: Global Studies Minor

To earn a minor in Global Studies, students must complete the following 24 hours
of courses. At least 12 credit hours of the minor must be upper-division. With pre-approval, students may be able to meet some of the minor requirements through a study abroad experience.

GLS 203 Introduction to Global Studies (3)
GLS 460 Global Social Justice (3) *Taken Spring of the senior year, in most cases.
A two-semester sequence in the same language (6) *Non-conversational courses may be used to meet general education requirements in foreign language.

Exploring World Cultures Component (6)

Choose at least two courses from the following. Some students may be able to meet up to 3 hours of this requirement through a study abroad experience. All prerequisites for courses must be met.
