PHL (Philosophy)

PHL 201 Criticism and Argument (3)
Classical and symbolic logic; historical, exegetical, and logical fallacies; and critical thinking and argumentation.

PHL 202 Philosophical Inquiry (3)
Classical issues of philosophy and its relationship to Christianity.

PHL 204 Religious Pilgrimage (3)
Analysis of meaning for living, with group interpretations and personal application; study of classic writings.

PHL 205 World Views (3)
The Worldviews Class is a Philosophy class designed to lead the student to an understanding and examination of the most prominent worldviews existing today. This examination will help the students determine the validity of each major worldview. Further, the student will come to a fuller understanding of his or her own worldview with the idea of integrating this into everyday life. Finally, the class presents a valid case for Christian Theism. Prerequisites: ENG 102.

PHL 302 Philosophy of Religion (3)
A historical and philosophical exploration of issues related to the study of theology with close attention to epistemology, philosophy of language, and theological method. Prerequisites: THE 201.

PHL 303 Metaphysics (3)
The study of the fundamental nature of reality. Prerequisites: PHL 202.

PHL 304 Ethical Issues (3)
The nature of the moral life and the relationship between decision-making, character, vision, and agency. Prerequisites: PHL 202.

PHL 305 Ethics in Technology (3)
This course explores ethical and moral issues associated with society in general and its relationship with modern technology. This class also seeks to develop critical thinking and analysis skills as a basis for ethical choice. Such concerns as piracy on the internet, cultural diversity, whistle-blowing, copyright protection, environmental impacts, electronic information and privacy of individuals, and professional codes of conduct are evaluated in a cultural, social, and historical context.

PHL 307 Ethical Thinking for Today's Teachers (3)
Moral dilemmas and contemporary ethical problems using multifaceted analysis and critical thinking with applications to education, business, home, and social environments.

PHL 320 Method in Science and Theology (3)
The potential and limits of scientific and theological methods and knowledge. Prerequisites: THE 201 or permission of the instructor.

PHL 350 Internship (1-12)
Supervised experience in a professional setting. Pass/Fail; may be repeated for credit.

PHL 361 Epistemology (3)
An investigation of theories of knowledge. Prerequisites: PHL 202.

PHL 390 Directed Study (1-3)
Guided independent investigation of a topic selected in consultation with the major or minor advisor. See Academic Policies for guidelines. Graded; may be repeated for credit.

PHL 405 Critical Thinking (3)
Expand mental power in order to think more clearly, logically, and creatively. Solve problems and make better decisions.

PHL 430 Continental Philosophy (3)
This course is an introduction to the basic issues, themes, and categories of Continental philosophy. Prerequisites: PHL 202.

PHL 435 Philosophy of Language (3)
A survey of classical and contemporary philosophies of language. Prerequisites: PHL 202.

PHL 446 Great Ideas (2)
Explore the great ideas—justice, good, evil, God, truth, equality—that run the world; explore the concept that ideas have consequences.

PHL 450 Internship (1-12)
Supervised experience in a professional setting. Pass/Fail; may be repeated for credit.

PHL 460 Christian Apologetics (3)
Historical, exegetical, and philosophical apologetics; epistemological assumptions in coherent, factually adequate, and existentially viable Christian beliefs. CUS Prerequisites: BIB 111, BIB 114, and PHL 202. CAGS Prerequisites: BIB 111, BIB 114.

PHL 490 Directed Study (1-3)
Guided independent investigation of a topic selected in consultation with the major or minor advisor. See Academic Policies for guidelines. Graded; may be repeated for credit.

PHL 497 Special Topics (1-3)
Examination, reflection, and analysis of selected philosophical issues. Graded; may be repeated for credit. Prerequisites: PHL 202.

PHL 498 Teaching Assistantship (1)
Supervised and limited preparation and delivery of lectures, tutoring of students, laboratory preparation, and assisting in the preparation and grading of examinations. Pass/Fail; may be repeated for credit.

PHL 505 Critical Thinking (2)
Teaching strategies for teaching and using critical thinking, including ways to think clearly, logically, and creatively. Learn to problem solve and make better decisions.

PHL 526 Professional Ethics (3)
Integration of personal, social, and professional ethics; emphasis on ethical theories, virtues, and values as a basis for professional ethical decision making, institutional administration, professional relationships, and teaching ethical decision making for K-12, corporate training, and university environments.
