Earn Credit for Life Learning Experiences

CCU recognizes the wealth of life experience adult students accumulate through non-traditional education. Learning credit opportunities offer adult students avenues to acquire credit for their life experiences through the following programs:

Prior Learning Credit Course and Portfolio

Prior Learning Credit is an opportunity for adult students to explore some of their non-traditional learning experiences to identify areas of learning that may warrant college-level credit. The PLC 400 course walks through the requirements to build a Prior Learning Credit Portfolio that represents learning that has taken place through life experience, career training, and in other non-traditional learning environments. Students earn three semester hours for taking the PLC course. After completion of the course students may develop and submit their Prior Learning Credit Portfolio for evaluation. The Portfolio is then evaluated by CCU faculty and credit is awarded based on the evaluation. Students may earn up to 31 credit hours through the portfolio process.

Credit by Exam

Students may choose to pursue College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams and Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES) testing to earn credit toward their degree.

Military Service

Students with military service may have their service record reviewed to evaluate training that may represent valuable credit. Students will need to submit their military records (DD214, etc.) for evaluation. Evaluation standards are provided through the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL), and American Council of Education (ACE).

Business Internship Program

Adult undergraduate students at CCU have the opportunity to participate in a business internship as another way to earn college credit for life experience. Students in the Business Internship Program earn three credit hours that will meet a requirement for one of the following courses:

  • Accounting Internship (ACC 450)
  • Business Internship (BUS 450)
  • Computer Information Systems Internship (CIS 450)
  • Leadership Internship (LED 450)
  • Management Internship (MGT 450)
  • Marketing Internship (MKT 450)

Students enrolled in the internship are required to accumulate 135 working hours with an internship-sponsored organization. The student will be assigned a supervisor who will mentor and train the student throughout the internship. In addition to the internship hours, students will need to complete the internship report term paper and other goals assigned by the internship supervisor. Contact your student services representative for more information.
