While online learning does involve independent work, it is also a great opportunity to become part of a unique learning community that will enhance your education. Perhaps one of the most valuable assets of learning in an online environment is that it is not restricted by place. Internet technology breaks down barriers, bringing together students and faculty from all over the world. This benefits students by allowing them to exchange ideas and learn from each other’s perspectives and experiences. In one class there could be students from different states around the U.S., as well as students from India or China. This diversity adds a new dimension to the classroom.
To help students make the most of the online learning environment, CCU seeks to provide a variety of opportunities for class interaction as well as one-on-one interaction between students and professors. Students are required to participate in threaded discussions where they reflect on the material and share insights for practical application. They also communicate through Instant Messaging, e-mail, and even through phone calls if they desire more personal communication. Professors hold virtual office hours so students know when they will be available for interaction. To further facilitate a sense of community, CCU has even hosted online BBQs, allowing students and faculty to get to know one another in a less formal environment.
