Colorado Christian University is authorized by the Colorado Department of Education to provide an Alternative Teacher Licensing Program. The Alternative Licensing Program is a one-year teacher licensure program designed by the Colorado Department of Education and Colorado Christian University to support those individuals who desire to become licensed teachers through an alternative teacher licensing path. Alternative teachers are employed as full-time teachers, while they receive training to become a licensed teacher.

The Alternative Licensing Program offered through CCU’s College of Adult and Graduate Studies equips students to impact the next generation of learners. Through our alternative teaching licensing program, students gain knowledge in educational theory that supports them as they work in their educational environment. This helps students develop competencies that enable them to become effective teachers in both public and private schools.

Taught from a Christian worldview, all of CCU’s education programs develop educators who are dedicated to addressing diverse learner needs with excellence through servant-leadership in their field and in society. Small class sizes encourage individualized learning and networking, and allow students direct access to professors who are also professionals in the field. Students graduate with the skills, experience, and credentials necessary to become licensed to teach in Colorado through our alternative teaching licensing program.

Program Admission Requirements

Candidates to the Alternative Teacher Licensing Program must:

  1. Hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
  2. Apply to the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) to be admitted to the Alternative Teacher Licensing Program. CDE determines what area(s) a candidate is qualified to teach.
  3. Pass the PLACE or PRAXIS test in the area(s) in which the candidate wishes to teach and be approved by the Colorado Department of Education based on their application review (elementary education, mathematics, etc.).

CDE issues a Statement of Eligibility (SOE) to the candidate. This statement is good for three years and allows a district to hire a person in the content area indicated on the SOE. After a student has received the SOE from CDE and been hired by an approved public, charter or private school, the student may apply to the CCU Alternative Licensing Program.
