Unbeliever in the White House

Friday, 3 July 2009 15:21 by John Andrews

July 4, 2009, finds me filled with positive patriotism as always, but with a shadow of concern.

Our country has had the occasional president who did not believe in the truths of the Declaration or the restraints of the Constitution.  But we have never had one who did not believe in the essential goodness of America itself.  In Barack Obama, sadly, we now have a president who is an unbeliever of all three.

I am confident we will defeat him and survive him.  Yet this is a somber Independence Day for me, because of the grave danger he and his personality cult and his socialist agenda pose to this land we love.  With this bad man in power, Americans face a new and deadly challenge to our ideals.  Let us rise to the occasion.

As a graduate of Colorado Christian University, I am disgusted.  This post is incendiary and hateful.  I am ashamed of the Centennial Institute.

On what do you base your premise, that Barack Obama is a "bad man," or that he is an unbeliever in the essential goodness of this land?  Have you read anything he has written, where he writes at length about the greatness of America?  Have you listened to his words at all, where he speaks of  the humbling gift and burden of freedom with responsibility that is the birthright of the greatest nation on Earth?  Or is your heart troubled by very un-Christian hate?  Are you more concerned with political gain?  For my parents, who were as Christian people as I've ever known -- working for the poor, going to church every Sunday, giving of themselves constantly -- were Democrats -- and they cared little whether anyone they worked with or helped was Republican or Democrat, Black or White.  Can you say the same?

I am concerned and saddened by the tone your teachings take, and you offer nothing on which to base it.  There are many who say that Christ himself was nearly a socialist -- much more so than any current President.

I've never been more embarrassed to say that I graduated from this school.  My only hope now is that CCU will one day close its doors and I can hide behind that fact.

I completely disagree and you should take the plank out of your own before judging someone faith in Christ.  You have provided  uneducated and insufficient details for your assumption/conclusion.

You should really learn more about him and I encourage you to NOT take my comment down.

Remember, Christ asked us to love all.  If you really dislike our leader, be more proactive than this.

The 4th of July was a good day for me, too! I celebrated the founding of a nation whose ideals were relatively unique for the time. We've done pretty well for ourselves I think.

Then again, during the previous eight years of Presidential administration, we lost our way in pretty much every conceivable dimension.

Mr. Andrews, you speak of the "truths of the Declaration" and the "restraints of the Constitution." From 2000-2008, those truths and restraints meant nothing to an administration determined to run roughshod over all that we have accomplished since Independence. When voices were raised against former President Bush, those voices were accused of being anti-American or worse. Now a new crop of voices is popping up, determined that it is in fact the "real" voice of America. These voices are criticizing the President for trying to save American lives and to restore our nation to prosperity. This misguided "patriotism," at the cost of reasoned analysis and, as odd as it may sound, actually trying to help out, is making the worst of a bad situation.

In the latter part of 2008, our country and, indeed, the world, celebrated the election of a person representative of the values that this country was founded upon. I will not argue that mistakes have been made - the cronyism and rampant profiteering that characterized the previous administration have led us into a tight spot, of course - but I'm convinced that Washington and President Obama is doing the best he can given the circumstances.

I find it especially discouraging that you would bandy about the worn-out Cold War terminology that the Right finds so easy-to-access. "Socialist agenda" to me means responsive government and public healthcare. Obama is not a socialist - he's a President.

Moreover, the Centennial Institute is the "think tank" of Colorado Christian University, an institution of higher learning dedicated to important Christian values. Your crude attempt to contrast President Obama as a Christian with your title "Unbeliever" is hurtful at best, shameful at worst. It makes me wary of the University's association with the Centennial Institute.

Mr. Andrews, Colorado Christian University trains students to become "seekers of truth." They will find no truth at the Centennial Institute, only the desperate, hypocritical screeching of an increasingly unpopular and especially out-of-date mode of thought. A mode of thought, I might add, that CCU students are growing tired of. Thank you for your time.

The underlying hate-filled tones of this post are sadly a contradiction to Jesus' teachings. That's not even to mention how terribly wrong the call to "rise to the occasion" could be misinterpreted. Jesus asked his followers to be devoted to love and the making of peace. Unfortunately, I do not see this represented in Mr. Andrew's rhetoric.

If we are fearful of the future, let us emulate Christ. May we trust in his Words, knowing that only in Christ is true Change found.

More from Adam Delp...As someone who loves the people and institution that is Colorado Christian University, I am ashamed by The Centennial Institute.  [For evidence] I refer you to the above post. With this level of vitriol the Centennial Institute runs the risk of being irrelevant, partisan, and hateful.  It should choose to be scholarly, peer-reviewed and a responsible and respected conservative think tank.  This post indicates that the Centennial Institute is more concerned with ignorantly bashing the "bad man", also known as the President of the United States, than thoughtfully discussing issues that conservatives care about.  At Colorado Christian University, I was taught and encouraged to honor Christ and share the love of Christ on campus and around the world.  This post does not honor Christ nor does it share His love around the world.  As a conservative and a graduate of Colorado Christian University, I am disgusted by posts like this. Caritas in Veritate, Adam Delp
