(Centennial Fellow) The recent US presidential election embraced secularism as the favored worldview in America. The “melting pot” of traditional America is now being replaced with an advanced model of multiculturalism. Multiculturalism is characterized by the cultural and moral relativism of the secular worldview. Secularism has been firmly established in Europe for many years. European secularism has yielded lower birth rates, lower economic growth, higher government presence in the economy and culture, reduced church attendance, increased tensions regarding religious freedom, and a growing sense that European failures of secularism bode poorly for the prospects of the continent. The leaders of France, Germany, and Great Britain, recognizing the direction in which they are headed, have all stated that “multiculturalism” has failed and that it has produced “extremism” in addition to the aforementioned economic problems. Despite such overwhelming evidence that condemns secularism, America may be embarking upon a similar journey which will surely not end well for freedom as we know it. Secularism has a long history of human rights violations and, along with Islam, represents the most significant threat to economic and religious freedom wherever these worldviews are dominant. The riots in Europe, which are a response to austerity measures imposed by world bankers, is a small example of the unrest that often precedes increased authoritarian rule.
The rise of anti-Semitism has now returned to Europe and some countries, e.g. Norway, have been successful in chasing the Jewish population out of their countries. Estimates vary with some stating that only a few hundred Jewish people remain in Norway. The neo-Nazi movement is also on the rise in Germany with some Jews in parts of Germany living in fear of beatings (due to wearing Kippots). Synagogues have also been burned down in Germany recalling the 1930’s and 1940’s. France, which has the largest concentration of European Jews, has seen a several hundred percent increase in violence towards Jews and Jewish businesses over the past year. There are now less than 6,400 Jews living in the 13 countries of the Middle East. Secularism and Islam are increasingly hostile to the Judeo-Christian worldview. America, the country with the strongest presence of the Judeo-Christian worldview, has the most religious freedom and the largest concentration of Christians and Jews in the world.
Secularism, which opposes the Judeo-Christian worldview, has a long history of religious persecution. According to the leading expert on democide (murder by government) R.J. Rummel, secular governments have killed more than 170 million people in the 20th century alone. Pre-20th century death counts by government (over 600 million) indicate that secular government is civilization’s greatest enemy. Records indicate that Islam, the #2 worldview measured by number of adherents, is responsible for approximately 270 million killed in its 1,400 year history. Moreover, Islam is the world’s leading perpetrator of religious persecution today, followed by secularism.
London now has more mosques than any western city and it has seen streets closed because Muslim street prayer prevents through traffic while the police were often afraid to intervene. Paris has had similar problems in the recent past. Muslims have also attacked Christians in Dearborn, MI regarding religious expression. Within the past two weeks, over 100 rockets and missiles have fallen on Israel towns, such as Sderot, where children were unable to go to school. Families have been hunkered down in bomb shelters for fear of their lives. Many Jews have been killed, wounded and thousands suffer from shock and fear. Sderot lives with a daily routine of rockets launched by Muslims in Gaza. Worldviews are in physical conflict throughout Europe and the Middle East and such conflicts may soon come to America. Citizens from all 50 states have now signed secession petitions from the United States.
Globalization, technology, demography, and immigration have brought these worldviews into conflict. The philosophy of government and the economy further intensify this contest. The US currently represents about 24% of world GDP while China is about 10% of world GDP. These two countries represent about 1/3 of the world GDP so anything that disturbs the balance of competition and cooperation between them has worldwide implications. China is now succeeding with their version of American capitalism while America is stumbling with its own version of secularism. China and America will increasingly be at odds over Middle East energy and strategy. The worldview tensions present in the Middle East will certainly extend beyond the region to involve global interests. Global risks will escalate with economic, political, and military consequences.
Christianity, Islam, and secularism represent almost 75% of the world’s population and will dominate the 21st century worldview battle. Sadly, secularism and Islam have killed hundreds of millions of people throughout history and both have been co-belligerents against the Judeo-Christian worldview. Our own president, secular in his worldview, is demonstrably sensitive to the Islamic world.
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, the Nobel Laureate who suffered at the hands of the Russian communists, asked “How did the west decline from its triumphal march to its present sickness? The mistake must be at the root, at the very basis of human thinking in the past centuries. I refer to the prevailing Western view of the world, which was first born during the Renaissance and found its political expression starting in the period of the Enlightenment. It became the basis for government and social science and could be defined as rationalistic humanism…the proclaimed and enforced autonomy of man from any higher force above him.” He was referring to secularism. Further, when asked why the former Soviet Union experienced such ongoing disasters, Solzhenitsyn said “Men have forgotten God; that’s why all this has happened.” Russia has long been a secular state but now has approximately 17 million Muslims, more than any other country in Europe.
Secularism was a primary motivating force for Margaret Sanger, who founded (what was to become) Planned Parenthood, an organization responsible for over 25 million abortions. It is a moral outrage that secularism has led the US government to fund Planned Parenthood with $487 million of US taxpayer dollars in the past year while Planned Parenthood performed almost 330,000 abortions. Although China, a secularist country, does not officially report abortion statistics, it is clear that their “one child” policy (and size of population) assures them of the #1 place in the world for abortions. They are followed by the secularist Russia at #2 and the (increasingly secular) United States as the #3 nation in the world ranked by abortions performed. Although Islam kills humans after they are born for religious reasons, it generally opposes killing humans in the womb before they are born for religious reasons. Contradictions aside, Islam is not in the top 20 nations of abortions performed. Further, Islamic countries have some of the highest total fertility rates (TFR) in the world and along with forced conversions, make it one of the fastest growing worldviews in the world.
The 19th century was dominated by a movement for economic freedom. The 20th century was dominated by a movement for political freedom. If the secularists have their way, the 21st century will be dominated by a movement for moral freedom. Secularists see the Judeo-Christian worldview as an obstacle to achieving their goals of secular global governance. Similarly, Islamists see the Judeo-Christian worldview as an obstacle to achieving their goals of establishing the Caliphate. It is clear that Islamists and secularists are co-belligerents against the Judeo-Christian worldview and the primary challenge for the Judeo-Christian worldview will be fought within the United States.
The Islamist will join the secularist in attacking the Constitution. The secularist wants to use the “separation of church and state” argument to eliminate the Judeo-Christian worldview from public life while the Islamist, in a “stealth jihad” will use the freedom of religion (and multiculturalism) through judges, etc. to open the door for Sharia law, food regulation, sanctioned prayer, and state suppression of Christian expression. In effect, the secularist uses the Islamist to counter Christian “oppression” and attack the Constitution while the Islamist will use the secularist to reduce the influence of the Judeo-Christian worldview in America.
Both are using each other in a type of “termite strategy.” Termites destroy a house slowly and then suddenly. By the time you see them, it may be too late. Americans need discernment with respect to these worldview strategies as consequences can be ominous.
This worldview battle to thwart the United States (and its traditional Judeo-Christian worldview) can be seen in the international arena as well. The United Nations is predominantly a secular organization and derives approximately 25% of its funding from the US. The Organization of the Islamic Conference, OIC, represents 57 Islamic countries and is the largest voting bloc of nations within the United Nations of 193 member countries. These are the two largest international organizations focused on global rule in opposition to the Judeo-Christian worldview by the US. The secularists want one world government through secular institutions while the Islamists want the Caliphate (using Sharia law) to rule the world. Both worldviews aspire to rule the world and see the Judeo-Christian US as the biggest obstacle to their objectives.
Secularists believe in a utopia based upon a secular government that will perfect mankind (which has been wronged by its institutions.) Secularists believe that more (and larger) government is necessary to overturn the negative liberties imposed by the Constitution in order to perfect man. Utopia is realized through social justice administered by the state.
Islamists believe in a utopia that will perfect mankind through Sharia law. Domestically, the number of Islamist 501(c)3 organizations have dramatically increased based on annual filings during the 2000’s. These organizations are forming faster than can be effectively monitored. Tracking the money through these organizations and how it is used is a Herculean task for the intelligence community. Islamists have a two track strategy of physical jihad throughout the world while focusing on stealth jihad in America. Stealth jihad uses existing institutions (increasingly controlled by secular interests) to ultimately overturn the Judeo-Christian worldview. It is a war from the inside. This is exactly the same strategy being executed by the secularists. Freedom invites such opposition. However, freedom is assured victory if the moral framework of a Judeo-Christian worldview remains intact. The founders believed that freedom requires virtue, and virtue requires faith. The faith they were referring to is the Judeo-Christian worldview.
Both secularists and Islamists have competing utopian visions that require world domination, however they will cooperate tactically in order to accomplish their strategic objectives. Both worldviews ultimately result in tyranny. The opposing Judeo-Christian view is that only God can perfect man and the individual must be free to seek and follow God without secular state intervention or the mandates of Sharia law. The Judeo-Christian worldview espouses individual freedom while positing that there is no utopia on earth (and will not be experienced until eternity arrives.) Hence, the ongoing battle of worldviews among Judeo-Christianity, secularism, and Islam.
It is clearly the wrong time for the US to embrace secularism as it will also encourage Islam over Judeo-Christianity and exact a high cost for the American civilization and for world stability. In any battle such as this, numbers often determine destiny. As the number of Judeo-Christian adherents decline, freedom will similarly decline. The three worst human slaughter machines in history are Russia, China, and Nazi Germany, all secular states.
According to Open Doors International, an organization focused on documenting the worldwide persecution of Christians, the top 31 persecutors of Christians in the world are Islamic countries, with the exceptions of North Korea (#1) Laos (#12), Vietnam (#19) and China (#21), all secular countries. It is estimated that 75% of all religious persecution in the world is against Christians despite it representing only 33% of the world’s population. According to the World Evangelical Alliance, more than 200 million Christians (in at least 60 countries) are denied fundamental human rights annually solely because of their faith. More than 100,000 Christians are killed worldwide in one year simply because of their faith.
The history of secularists joining efforts with Islamists is longstanding. The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem allied with Hitler’s Germany to annihilate the Jews. The Islamist Ayatollah Khomeini aligned with secular Russia against Judeo-Christian America shortly after returning to power in Iran. Great Britain is the best international example of secular-Islamic cooperation. Great Britain was the leading empire in the 19th century, and the British pound was the world’s reserve currency. But Great Britain is now a shadow of its former self and has approved more than 85 Sharia courts to operate alongside, and in place of, the British courts. Church going in the UK has declined to record lows with approximately 15% of citizens going to church one time a month. More people attend mosques services than church services.
The US shows increasing evidence of such cooperation between the secular and Islamist worldviews. Islamist Maj. Nidal Hasan screamed “Allahu Akbar” and opened fire at Ft. Hood on innocent Americans, killing 13 and wounding 32 others. Army Chief of Staff Gen. George Casey said just after the terrorist attack “Our diversity, not only in our Army, but in our country, is a strength, and as horrific as this tragedy was; if our diversity becomes a casualty, I think that is worse.” The Obama administration called this terrorist act “workplace violence.” The safest place from Islamists should be in an Army fort in the middle of Texas. Sadly, there may be few safe places when secularists and Islamists join forces in opposition to the Judeo-Christian worldview. Secularists and Islamists join together in the obfuscation of their motives.
The ongoing Benghazi tragedy continues to unfold with new information concerning another intersection of Islamic terror and a secularist response. Other examples confirm the Islamist-secularist worldview collaboration, e.g., renaming terrorism as “man-caused disasters” or “overseas contingency operations.” David Horowitz wrote a best-selling book Unholy Alliance: Radical Islam and the American Left about this very subject. The evidence is overwhelming for those with an eye to see.
Both secularists and Islamists depend upon moral relativism regarding their tactics to achieve their objectives. The secularists ideological hero is Saul Alinsky, author of “Rules for Radicals” which was dedicated to Lucifer in the preamble. The secularist playbook is Machiavellian where the “ends justify the means.” The Islamist is also devoted to moral relativism through the Islamic doctrines of taqiyya (deception is approved if it advances the cause of Islam) hudna (temporary cease-fires can be established and honored until Islamic position strength is increased) and abrogation (subsequent Koranic verses supercede prior verses if they are in conflict.) This widespread moral relativism within these two worldviews makes the rules of engagement very complicated for Judeo-Christian advocates. In addition, secularists exert controlling influence over the educational establishment, the media institutions, the government, and a large part of the judiciary. Nevertheless, direct and vigilant engagement is required to prevent these two worldviews from dominating America. Should that battle be lost, America will become like any other country on earth. There will be no place to run. Tyranny will return to dominate the world as it has throughout recorded history.
Winston Churchill said “An appeaser is one who feeds the crocodile hoping it will eat him last. Victory will never be found in taking the line of least resistance.” Arnold Toynbee said in A Study of History that “Civilizations die from suicide, not murder.” An old maxim about the relationship between freedom and responsibility goes like this:
“There was an important job to be done and everybody was sure somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it but nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that, because it was everybody’s job. Everybody thought anybody could do it, but nobody realized that everybody wouldn’t do it. It ended up that everybody blamed somebody when nobody did what anybody could have done.” The Bible says in James 4:17 “Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.” Willful neglect is legally defined as “conscious, intentional failure or reckless indifference” and is a prosecutable crime in certain instances, e.g. being a member of the board of directors of a publicly held company, etc. The 2012 voter turnout percentage was lower than 2008 or 2004 at a time when the worldview choices represented by the presidential candidates was the most dramatic in decades.
The contest among Judeo-Christianity, secularism, and Islam will grow more intense through the 21st century. America is now divided about supporting its own traditional Judeo-Christian heritage. There are evil, incompetent, and indifferent combatants in this worldview battle. Evil combatants (radical Islamists and radical secularists) do bad things on purpose. Incompetent combatants (cultural Christians) do bad things by accident. Indifferent combatants (majority of Americans) don’t care whether others do good or bad as long as their personal peace and prosperity is not disturbed. The evil combatants use the incompetent and indifferent to accomplish their goals for society. Adherents to the Judeo-Christian worldview need to educate and engage the latter two to defeat the former lest America be defeated from within. America’s decision on which worldview to defend will determine her destiny. The current rise of the secular worldview bodes poorly for the future when considering the past. The secularists and Islamists have the will, but not the power (yet) to destroy the Judeo-Christian way of life in America. However, the great blessings and achievements of the Judeo-Christian worldview (which maximizes freedom and equality of opportunity) should inspire Americans to return to the freedoms envisioned by our founders which will restore the country that we love.
