Australia, Empire, and the Deeper Exceptionalism

(Sydney) Ranking sixth among the world’s geographical behemoths—behind Russia, Canada, China, United States, and Brazil—Australia at 2.9 million square miles is almost identical in size and similar in shape to America’s original forty-eight states.

Very sparsely populated like neighboring New Zealand Australia’s population of twenty–two million is smaller than Texas. By reason of limited access to scarce water resources 90% of Australians are concentrated on just 2.6% of the country’s real estate. Continue reading

New Zealand, the far country

(Auckland) Broadly defined the Anglosphere is made up of six Christian, Western, Democratic sovereign nations where the dominant language is English. They are neatly paired into adjacent countries on three continents- the United Kingdom and Ireland in Europe, the United States and Canada in North America, New Zealand and Australia in the continent named for the latter. Roughly four hundred million people live in these countries, the vast majority of them in the U.S. and the U.K. Continue reading

Hillary, Barack, and Lance Armstrong

(‘76 Contributor) Considered a cancer-surviving “bad*** on a bike,” it turns out Lance Armstrong is just a bad guy — and a fraud. Armstrong”s admission that he doped his way to seven Tour de France titles even prompted CBS News CEO Jeffrey Fager to Think Again about his network”s role in the “Miracle Man”s” narrative. “We helped create the myth,” he acknowledged, because “we wanted to believe this absolutely inspirational story. But we were duped.” Continue reading

How two fathers lost their sons to jihad

Editor’s Note: Army Private Andy Long was gunned down by homegrown jihadist Carlos Bledsoe (who had taken the name Abdulhakim Muhammad after training with Al Qaeda in Yemen) at a Little Rock recruiting station on June 2, 2009. After federal prosecutors declined to bring charges, the killer was convicted in Arkansas state court and is now serving 12 consecutive life terms. The two men’s fathers, Daris Long and Melvin Bledsoe, spoke at Centennial Institute on Dec. 10, 2012, to promote the new documentary film about their experience, ”Losing Our Sons.” Daris Long’s remarks were as follows: Continue reading

Americans must take Geert Wilders’ warning seriously

Editor’s Note: Researcher and analyst Bill Coates, writing from western Colorado, responded to the recent Geert Wilders essay in Centennial Review, “Marked for Death Because I Dared to Criticize Islam” (November 2012), with the following commentary keyed to Wilders’ warning, “My American friends, make no mistake. Islam is also coming for America.” Continue reading

Think again: America must revive ‘peace through strength’

(‘76 Contributor) American revolutionary Patrick Henry famously declared, “Give me liberty or give me death!” This month, furious mobs throughout the Islamic world decree death, a sentence they imposed on four Americans in Libya, including U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens — the first U.S. ambassador murdered in the line of duty since 1979. Before buying the spin that the deadly attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi was a spontaneous response to an anti-Islam video, Think Again. Continue reading

Iran’s dominance in Iraq steadily increases

(Sull, Iraq) So America’s liberal newspaper of record is shocked, shocked! that Prime Minister al-Maliki and the Iraqi government are puppets of the Iranian administration.

In what might be more a function of the curtailing of foreign reporters and the use of stringers to report news, one of the most open secrets in Iraq, even as far north as here in Kurdistan, was seen as news by the New York Times the other day. Continue reading

Emanuel in shameful company with Putin & Koran

(Centennial Fellow) In Russia, Vladimir Putin’s government is prosecuting three women for a prayer to toss the president out of office. In the Netherlands and Denmark, officials have been putting people on trial for what they have said about Muslims. In Chicago, San Francisco and Boston, mayors are aiming to stop a restaurant chain from expanding its outlets because the owner does not believe in gay marriage. Continue reading

GOP dangerously ignorant of Muslim Brotherhood threat

(Centennial Fellow) It has been said that the truth offends those who don’t have it. It would appear Senator John McCain and Speaker John Boehner do not have the truth and the facts showing the danger the Muslim Brotherhood’s movement in America’s government poses today. Americans should be very concerned about this.

In letters dated June 13, 2012, five Members of Congress Continue reading

Europeanizing America into crisis

(Centennial Fellow) President Barack Obama’s $840 billion stimulus contained more than a million dollars to study erectile dysfunction, and yes, I know, any complaint will be identified as a war on men.

That would be in addition to a Republican war on women as alleged by zanies not liking perfectly sound criticisms of Obama’s health insurance mindlessness. Continue reading
