FAFSA Tips

You can complete the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov and you can sign the application electronically using a PIN which you can obtain at the Department of Education’s PIN Web site at www.pin.ed.gov.

Benefits of completing the FAFSA online:

  • It’s fast! You’ll get your results 7 to 14 days sooner than if you mail in a paper application.
  • It’s easy! The web site is easy to navigate and the online FAFSA allows you to skip questions that don’t apply to you.
  • It’s more accurate! Your answers are edited automatically so you’ll make fewer mistakes. Extensive on-line help is available with more instructions than are available on the paper form.

Do not leave any question blank unless instructed to skip an entire section by the FAFSA. Any question left blank may delay your financial aid.

SECTION TWO, QUESTIONS 32-45: We recommend that you use actual tax information rather than estimated figures. The Department of Education will select those who estimate their tax information for a process known as verification. Students chosen for verification must submit additional information to the Financial Aid Office and this may delay the processing of your financial aid.

SECTION TWO, QUESTIONS 46-47: If you do not receive veteran’s education benefits, please enter zero’s for these questions. If you will receive VA benefits, but do not know how much, DO NOT leave this question blank. Please enter your estimated benefit amounts and the number of months you expect to receive benefits. You may want to contact the VA Hotline toll free at (888) 442-4551 or visit the VA website at www.gibill.va.gov to obtain more information regarding your benefits.

SECTION THREE, QUESTIONS 48-55: If you can answer yes to any of the questions in step three, you can skip step four and go to step five. If you cannot answer yes to any of the questions you will be considered a dependent student and your parent(s) must complete the questions in step four.

Don’t forget to sign the FAFSA!

  • If you are filing electronically via the web:
  1. You can sign the application using the PIN number you obtained from the Department of Education PIN website, or you can print the signature page and mail it to the FAFSA Processing Center.
  2. Print a copy of the application for your records.
  3. If you provided your e-mail address in question 13, you will receive information about your application within a few days after it is processed.
  • If you completed a paper application of the FAFSA:
  1. Make a copy of the FAFSA for your records.
