APPROACHING A RESEARCH TOPIC

Start broadly with: Comprehensive Reference Materials in the Reference Room.

Consult: Library Catalog for CCU books and other relevant information.
Topic: try either a subject keyword or starts with search (example: creation).
Browse in the Stacks in LC Call Numbers (example: BS 650-667 – Bible and science).

Consult: Prospector for materials at other libraries.
You may wish to become a Jefferson County Public Library cardholder and Prospector member at Belmar Library (Allison Street two blocks from the CCU Lakewood Campus) for the fastest turn around. Apply at http://info.jefferson.lib.co.us/app_online.html. Or, you may request an Interlibrary Loan through the Library. Make sure to leave sufficient lead time for any interlibrary borrowing requests.

To get more specific, use: Journal Articles.

Especially Relevant Databases: Academic Search Premier* and ProQuest* for most any subject -- ATLAReligion,* or Christian Periodical Index for a Christian perspective on a given topic -– Business Source Premier* for business.

*Full-text articles -- Registered students should contact the Library where a password and authorization are needed or go to Department Library at the CCU Web entry page.

Utilize the same type of search as for the Library Catalog. If you request “controversy between creation and evolution,” ONLY articles with all five words are shown. A request that would potentially be more productive, would be “evolution AND creation.” Try synonyms. Look for the phraseology in current usage.

Also use: Web Resources.

Also use if currency is a priority: Newspaper Articles.

Try: Subject Guides as a guide/template to follow in researching a topic.

Journal Articles
Especially Relevant Databases:  Academic Search Premier,* and ProQuest.*

*Full-text articles - Registered students should contact the Library where a password and authorization are needed or go to Department Library at the CCU Web entry page.

Utilize the same type of search as for the Library Catalog. If you ask for "social justice around the globe,"  you are asking that ONLY articles with all five words be shown. A request that would potentially be more productive, would be, for example "social justice" or possibly "global social justice." Instead of "affirmative action in college admission's policy," try "affirmative action."  Try synonyms and look for the phraseology in current usage.

Another usefu database is a reference database called CQ Researcher.  It covers social justice topics with an overview, pro and con, trends, statistics, outlook, etc.

Journal Articles
Especially Relevant Databases - Academic Search Premier,* ProQuest,*FirstSearch ERIC**

*Full-text articles - Registered students should contact the Library where a password and authorization are needed or go to Department Library at the CCU Web entry page.

**Primarily an index, it is extremely limited in full-text journal articles. For a given article cited in ERIC, one can search the Library’s online databases, Academic Search Premier and ProQuest or search for hard copy availability on the Library periodical shelves via the Library Serials List (blue notebook at the Reference Desk). The EJ numbers have no real relevance. One must search for the journal name itself. The ED numbers represent books and reports. ED 000 000 ERIC Documents are available in Reference on microfiche and can be printed on the Microfiche Reader Printer.

Utilize the same type of search as for the Library Catalog. If you request “special education in the middle school classroom,” you are asking that ONLY articles with all seven words be shown. A request that would potentially be more productive, would be, for example, “special education" AND "middle school."  Try synonyms and look for the phraseology in current usage. For literature, search the author and search the title of the work.
