CCU Partners with Local Churches and Agencies for 12th Annual Service Day
This Saturday, August 22, 2009, students, staff, and faculty members from Colorado Christian University will fan out across the Lakewood community for the 12th annual CCU Service Day. More than 300 individuals from CCU will participate this year, including new and returning students. The event is sponsored by the University's Life Directions Center, a unique student-advising service that addresses academic, professional, and spiritual development.
ervice Day was created more than a decade ago to provide CCU students with a hands-on grasp of the University's emphasis on meaningful service as part of their educational and faith-building journeys. It has become a powerful academic counterpart, bridging the gap between classroom studies and how students apply their knowledge and abilities as caring, everyday citizens. Scheduled for the beginning of the fall semester each year, the event focuses primarily on providing assistance to low-income, single-parent, and elderly households.
"The Bible states that it is better to give than to receive," explains CCU senior Samantha Scoggins. "This experience allows us to truly discover what that means."
This year's Service Day projects will include painting, yard work, cleaning, and event setup at people’s homes. Fully embracing the community focus, CCU has partnered in the effort with volunteers from local churches and city agencies.
"What I'm really looking forward to this year," Scoggins added, "is the chance not only to serve, but to serve our neighbors." (Unlike last year, when CCU volunteers visited homes throughout the broader West Denver area, this year's projects will focus solely on the University's hometown city.) "I think it will help students become invested in volunteer opportunities that will continue long after Service Day is over."
