Colorado Christian University Takes an Active Role at January Pro-life Events

Thousands of pro-life advocates rallied on January 13 at the State Capitol for the annual Celebrate Life rally and march in a grand show of unity and solidarity for life. The rally featured inspiring speakers including Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila of the Archdiocese of Denver, CCU president Donald W. Sweeting, Bethany Janzen of Students for Life of America, and the Sisters of Life.

The march was a peaceful demonstration held in witness to the dignity of life and in somber remembrance of the Roe v. Wade decision on January 22, 1973 by the U.S. Supreme Court that legalized abortion nationwide.

National Convictions

In addition, nineteen CCU students traveled to Washington D.C. to participate in the 2018 March for Life conference, rally, and march on January 19 alongside thousands of pro-life advocates from across the country.

The students also attended the national Students for Life of America conference where they participated in breakout sessions and heard the testimony of Pam Tebow, the mother of Tim Tebow - former NFL quarterback and current outfielder for the New York Mets.

During the conference, three CCU students wrote op-eds about the sanctity of life (Hana Michel '19, Katie Kellett '18, and Ben Lindstrom '20). Kellet's op-ed was published in the Christian Post and both Kellet and Lindstrom were interviewed by CBN television's Paul Strand.

White House Engagement

During their time in Washington D.C., CCU student Stephanie Schlabach '18 was invited - along with a select few Students for Life of America representatives - to personally meet with U.S. Vice President Mike Pence and his wife, Karen.

"We are very appreciative of the vice president and the second lady taking time out of their busy schedules to speak with the pro-life generation," commented Schlabach. "I want to work at a crisis pregnancy center after graduating from CCU and I am hopeful that the government will continue to empower my generation with pro-life judges and policies."

During the roundtable discussion, students shared their concerns with Vice President Pence about university administrators, professors, and even fellow students on campuses across the nation attacking the right to free speech for students who advocate for pro-life policies.

Dr. Sweeting emphasized the value of students actively participating in political discourse. "This particular historic moment, when our future is forgetting the foundation of our own humanness, it is especially important to affirm together the basis and blessing of human dignity," said Sweeting.

He continued, "At CCU we are training our students to be leaders. One of our strategic objectives as a university is to impact the culture in support of the sanctity of life; this includes continuing to provide opportunities for our students to be leaders who advocate for pro-life causes."
