This Denver Post story (linked here) on the Jefferson County school-board election passes as objective news reporting?
“Hey, I know there’s no evidence to back this up, but I heard union officials say their opponents are promoting vouchers. So let’s make that the headline and the lead.”
Stories like this one neither inform nor elevate the discussion about important elections. Instead, it merely gives play to one side’s scare tactics. If the Post did the same with scare tactics from the other side, I could at least say they were being even-handed.
And with mail-in ballots starting to go out this week, did I mention the peculiar timing of this story? Do the small donor committees of JCEA ($36,000 in bank as of July) & CEA ($183,000 in bank as of July) need free in-kind support through “earned” media at such a critical moment.
