Campus Safety Policies

CCU is committed to providing a safe environment for all members of the community. That is why the University created and implemented policies for handling and reporting crimes.

All crimes that occur on Colorado Christian University campuses will be reported. Federal guidelines require reports on murder, sex offenses (forcible and non-forcible), robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, and motor vehicle theft. Additionally, the University is required to report the number of arrests on campus for liquor law violations, drug abuse violations, and weapons possessions. Reports on all crimes must be made to the CCU Campus Safety and Security Department, and the Lakewood Police are advised of any crimes on the Lakewood campus. The Campus Safety and Security Department Officers contact the Police or Sheriff’s Department if an arrest needs to be made on any of the CCU campuses.

Colorado Christian University has a drug-free policy and alcoholic beverages are prohibited. Liquor laws and drug abuse laws are strictly enforced on CCU campuses. For policies on liquor and drugs, refer to the Policies of Student Conduct section of the Student Handbook (PDF).

The Campus Safety and Security Department recognizes that although students reside on a Christian university campus, we live in a world with very real dangers. Campus Safety and Security Department personnel have several specific tasks to perform on each tour of duty, and because of this, students are encouraged to think about the well-being of other students whenever possible, while being aware of their surroundings and avoiding unnecessary risks. Should students need a Campus Safety and Security Department escort, they are encouraged to call the officer on duty. Department personnel are available to serve and assist with students’ safety. Students may request that an officer to escort them to their destination rather than walking alone after dark (or anytime there may be a safety concern).

To promote safety and security on campus, the department often holds training sessions that address topics related to student safety. All topics of general interest will be posted and may be attended by any student or employee of CCU. Rape prevention seminars are also conducted at the beginning of each semester.

Students are notified if a major crime occurs on campus by notices posted around campus. The Student Life department is also given information on crime activity so residential advisers can inform students living on campus. Notification is made by the end of the next weekday after a major crime has been committed on campus.

Students living on campus are encouraged to lock their doors when not in their rooms and should pull drapes or other window coverings to reduce criminal opportunity. All public CCU buildings are locked at night starting at 10:00 p.m. Students and employees must be out of the buildings at the time they are locked. Only cleaning crews and Campus Safety and Security Department Officers are to be in the CCU buildings past lock-up time as alarms protect some of the critical property areas of the University.
