Frequently Asked Questions about CCU’s Orientation Program

What is Weekend of Welcome?
Weekend of Welcome is part one of the CCU Orientation Program for new students. WOW consists of parent and student workshops, service projects, social activities, testing opportunities, and community ceremonies. These four days are a vital time to assist in your transition to the CCU community.

What is part two of CCU’s Orientation Program?
The New Student Retreat (September 5-7) is the second part of orientation for all new students. We’ll head up to Young Life’s Frontier Ranch for a weekend to consider the big questions of college.

When does Weekend of Welcome begin and end?
WOW begins on Thursday, August 21, 2008. The last day of WOW is Sunday, August 24, 2008. See the WOW Schedule for a sample of planned events and activities.

Are siblings allowed to attend WOW events?
We know this is a transition time for the entire family and welcome family members at WOW. Siblings are encouraged to attend; however, since most activities are geared towards students and parents, siblings can feel out of place. We leave this decision to parents.

When are parent events finished for the weekend?
Parent activities are scheduled on Thursday, August 21 and Friday, August 22. Students will be busy in WOW activities during the entire weekend.

How much does WOW cost? What about the New Student Retreat?
The majority of WOW events, including several meals in the Dining Commons, are free for families of new students. There are two events which have a cost involved: the WOW Opening Banquet on August 21 ($20 for students / guests, $15 for children) and the Best of Colorado White Water Rafting Trip on August 30 ($70 for students). The New Student Retreat is free for all new students.

Am I required to attend WOW and the New Student Retreat?
WOW is mandatory for all first-time freshmen and transfer students. The New Student Retreat is also required for all first-time freshmen and is highly encouraged for transfer students.

How do I register for WOW?
You can register for WOW from the WOW Schedule page.

How do I register for the New Student Retreat?
All first-time freshmen and anyone registered for an FYI class are automatically registered for the New Student Retreat. If you are a transfer student and would like to attend the retreat, please e-mail wow@ccu.edu and we’ll sign you up.

Can I take Summer Term courses during the Weekend of Welcome?
First-time freshmen students are not allowed to take summer courses. Transfer students are allowed to take courses. Please contact your Life Directions Center advisor to inquire about courses.

Where do I find the schedule for WOW and information about the New Student Retreat?
The WOW Schedule and information about the New Student Retreat are both available online.

When can I start moving in to my apartment?
Students may check into their Residence Halls at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 21.

Can I get a ride to CCU from the airport?
CCU will provide airport transportation on Thursday, August 21 from Denver International Airport to campus. When you register for WOW, there is an option for requesting an airport pick up.

What should I bring to CCU?

Isn’t the Democratic National Convention happening in Denver that week?
The DNC will be in Denver on August 25-28, 2008. Denver International Airport and area hotels will be busy during WOW, so get your tickets and hotel reservations early! Learn more about the Democratic National Convention.

Where can my parents stay during WOW?
Parents will need to make their own arrangements for lodging during WOW. CCU is offering special rates with a few local hotels for your convenience.
