(By Helen Raleigh, Centennial Fellow) Recently, the Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals let stand a lower-court injunction that temporarily blocked the Obama administration from carrying out President Obama’s executive order which would make illegal aliens eligible for “lawful presence, work authorization and associated benefits.”
In an ironic twist, the long-awaited sequel to the cult classic “Dumb and Dumber” opened as Americans discovered that in the eyes of our political class, we’re like the film’s low-IQ duo — “stupid voters.”
The heart-breaking and, one would hope, unintentionally manufactured crisis of thousands of unaccompanied children crossing America’s southern border illegally is both symptomatic of the problems in government and suggestive of nongovernmental solutions.
President Barack Obama, whose power abuses have played a role in the imperilment of tens of thousands of children and earned him slaps by the U.S. Supreme Court and the threat of a lawsuit by House Republicans, has promised more of the same.
Imagine a July 4th tradition like Hollywood’s where each year the Oscars pay homage to fallen stars. Liberty-loving Americans would fete public servants who’ve honored Thomas Jefferson’s rule to “leave no authority existing not responsible to the people.”
A growing majority of Americans understands lies and deceit were the basis for Obamacare. That’s why Washington, D.C., Democrats are suddenly pushing immigration reform. President Obama declares “it’s time” for Republicans to help “get it done” by granting legal status to undocumented immigrants, allowing them to fulfill their dreams. If Republicans fall for this diversionary ploy, they won’t be just ignoring public sentiment regarding amnesty; they’ll be enabling an increasingly lawless president.
The United States enjoys and is benefitted by a wonderful attraction to immigrants, people who lawfully come here from other lands to live and be a part of this exceptional nation. Unfortunately, it also attracts migrants who either cross our borders or enter our ports illegally,
