CCU Students Remember to Help Others During Annual Service Day
As colleges and universities across the nation gear up for the new academic year, Colorado Christian University will begin its fall 2007 semester with an atypical back-to-school event: Service Day.
On August 25, as part of CCU's new student orientation, more than 300 incoming freshmen and transfer students will participate in Service Day. This daylong activity pairs groups of students and faculty alongside nonprofit agencies throughout the Denver metro area for a series of public service work projects. Participants connect with members of the local community and also get to know one another better.
An annual CCU tradition, Service Day is held the Saturday prior to each new fall semester. The program was designed to not only respond to community needs in a practical way, but also provide students with a broader perspective on the biblical calling to act in service to others. Historically, local response to the University's effort has been very positive.
Among the projects scheduled for this year are painting, renovation, gardening, cleaning, and working with youth and the elderly. CCU will work with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Hands for Hope, Warren Village, Prodigal Gatherings, and Climb for Cancer. Project sites include Denver, Aurora, Centennial, Lakewood, and Golden.
"Service Day is a way to show our students that engagement with the world is an integral part of their education here," commented CCU staff member Missy Davis.
