The No. 2-seeded Cougars downed fourth-seeded Metropolitan State University of Denver, 9-5, Saturday to clinch the first RMAC crown in program history.

“This team has worked incredibly hard and they earned this moment,” said head coach Larry Hays. “These women have had one of the most productive seasons in program history — at one point going on a 29-game winning streak. It's not over yet. We are looking to make some noise at regionals and keep this remarkable season going.”

CCU’s Sami Edwards was named the RMAC tournament’s most valuable player. Joining Edwards, teammates Abrie Castillo, Logan Menzies, Alexis Hamilton and Kenzie Middleton were named to the all-tournament team.

“What an honor it is to coach these players who are exceptionally dedicated to their sport and have such character on and off the field,” Hays said. “They’ve brought home our first-ever RMAC title and made me very proud. They have made our school proud.”

Hays came out of retirement to coach at Colorado Christian University. He previously served as the head softball coach and athletic director at Lubbock Christian, where he led the team to a NAIA national championship. Hays has received several personal awards including the Southwest Conference Baseball Coach of the Year and Big 12 Baseball Coach of the Year. Hays has also been inducted into the NAIA, Texas Baseball and National College Baseball halls of fame.

CCU is seeded eighth in the South Central Regional bracket and will face No. 1 seed and regional host, University of Texas at Tyler. Joining the Cougars in the region are No. 4 seed Lubbock Christian and No. 5 seed Angelo State. Stay tuned to CCUCougars.com for updated information on how to watch or listen to the team live.
