I have worked in many areas of nursing but during the last 10 years my focus has been on mental health nursing. People with mental illness are too often isolated by stigma and fear, when what they actually deserve is respect and dignity. In order to change this I am active in my church in a mental health ministry, focusing on education about mental illness, offering support to families and patients and interacting with community groups in mental health related programs. Nursing is my ministry and I feel passionate about the pain and suffering experienced by those who struggle with mental illness.
In 2013 I was privileged to be part of a mission trip to Haiti. Our task was to install water filtration systems in individual homes, in an effort to prevent water borne illnesses – a major cause of severe sickness and mortality in Haiti. In the past I have also volunteered in hurricane relief work in New Orleans.
I moved to Colorado from Kentucky in 2011 and live in a rural area of Longmont where I am blessed to be able to view the foothills and Meeker’s and Long’s Peaks every day – what a way to know God’s presence! My faith journey has been “up and down”, but I feel God acting in my life, now more than ever. He has always placed me where I have learned and grown and I feel His guidance in leading me back to Colorado and into teaching again. I rejoice in His presence and unending love!
