How to Choose an MBA Concentration?

Whether you're interested in starting your own business, becoming the vice president of a company, or simply growing as a business professional, a master's degree in business (MBA) can offer you an abundant education that may take your career to another level. If you are considering an MBA degree, you might have more options than you think when it comes to choosing a concentration, which is also known as an emphasis.

For instance, Colorado Christian University offers four different paths within our online MBA degree program. Our MBA emphases include Leadership, Project Management, Advanced Accounting, and Health Care Administration. If it seems like a daunting task to choose which emphasis is best for your goals, we've compiled a guide that will help you choose an MBA program.

Here's how to choose the right MBA program for you

Research available MBA options

There are a lot of MBA programs out there. Some are offered only on campus, while others are offered online. CCU's online MBA programs are all offered online to accommodate busy, working adults. Other MBA options include the length of the program and courses, as well as having to choose an emphasis. A plain MBA might sound like an easier option, but a focused MBA with an emphasis can give you the specific education you need for your area of work, like finance, healthcare, or management.

View each program's required courses

Most MBA programs offer you the option to view required courses and each course's description. This will help you understand precisely what you'll be learning from each MBA course. Know that some of the listed courses might require you to take prerequisite classes such as statistics, accounting, or finance to prepare you for master's level coursework.

Find out what you're passionate about

Are you good with numbers? Do you want to get into the healthcare field? Do you see yourself as a manager at your company? These are all questions you might want to ask yourself in order to find out what you're professionally passionate about. Write down a list of your interests, and compare and contrast them with the available MBA emphases.

Explore another degree option

If you're interested in earning a master's degree in order to become a better leader and manager, you might also consider CCU's Master of Leadership (MOL) program. While CCU offers an MBA with a Leadership emphasis, this online MOL degree will give you experience in HR management, social technology, and constitutional law.

Focus on your future

Whichever degree speaks to you more, we want to get you thinking about your professional goals. Where do you see yourself after you graduate? Looking at your ideal future, it may help you realize what degree you need in order to get there.
