Susan Rutherford

Trustee Spotlight

Susan Rutherford has enjoyed a lifelong career in human resources, working in diverse industries with companies, including American Medical Response, The Broe Companies, Inc., and Hilton Hotels. Rutherford was a senior leader for over ten years with DaVita, a global healthcare company, and she was instrumental in helping build and develop the people-services functions for DaVita International, traveling and working in 11 countries in Asia, Europe, and Latin America. She continues her HR career today as an independent consultant.

On top of her extensive background in human resources, Rutherford’s care for people expands outside of her career and into her community, living out her belief that "To whom much is given, much is required." Desiring to serve the Lord with the gifts she has been given, Rutherford has spent many years serving on boards and committees, extending her investment in people. She served for six years on the Board of Trustees for Tennyson Center for Children, an organization dedicated to caring for neglected, abused, and traumatized children through programs and services, and has served on the advisory board for the Intermountain Division of The Salvation Army since 2015.

Although Rutherford earned her bachelor’s degree in political science from Willamette University in Salem, OR, as a fourth-generation Coloradan, she loves the beauty and history of Colorado and currently serves on the Board of Trustees for Historic Denver, Inc. She has also been involved with the Centennial Institute for several years and is a committed supporter of the work of the Institute. She has had great joy hosting and sharing with students from other countries through International Students, Inc. and has mentored young women through Friends for Youth.

Along with her heart for people, music has also been a lifelong pursuit and passion for Rutherford. She met her late husband, acclaimed jazz saxophonist and composer Fred Hess, through their shared love of music. Rutherford plays violin and piano and has enjoyed sharing music in senior residences and in music ministries through various churches over the years. Her home church is St. John's Lutheran Church in Denver.

In her spare time, Rutherford is an avid gardener and active member of the Denver Rose Society, and she exhibits roses grown in her garden in local and national rose shows. She also enjoys competing with her Belgian Shepherd in the sport of Dog Agility and hiking in the beauty of the Colorado mountains.
