CCU's Dr. Watson Lectures Grad Students at England's Oxford Brookes University

Colorado Christian University Professor of History Dr. William Watson is currently in Oxford, England, spending a month lecturing at Oxford Brookes University as a visiting fellow with the school's Institute for Historical and Cultural Research. During his stay, Watson will also conduct research for his forthcoming book, speak at several public conferences, and work closely with faculty from Brookes's theology, education, and history departments.

While lecturing at Brookes, Dr. Watson will instruct graduate students on the subject of 17th-18th century English ecclesiastical (church) history. A specialist on the ongoing "Intelligent Design" debate dominating many classrooms and public spheres, he will participate on June 14 at Brookes's Harcourt Hill campus in a public panel discussion on the topic. Watson is also an expert on the history of the late Stuart Church, and on June 27 will present a paper on his current work at the university's International Colloquium on Ecclesiastical History.

In regards to his research, Dr. Watson will read in the archives of the British Library in London, the Bodleian Library at Oxford, the Cambridge University Library, and at London's Lambeth Palace Library--the principal library and record office for the history of the Church of England. Watson's current areas of interest focus on Bishop William Lloyd (1627-1717) and English preacher, poet, and hymn writer Isaac Watts (1674-1748).

A member of the CCU faculty since 1996, Dr. Watson has also taught as a Fulbright Senior Scholar at Moldova State University in Eastern Europe and studied at London's Institute for Historical Research. He holds a Ph.D. in Early Modern European History from the University of California-Riverside and a Master of Divinity degree (church history emphasis) from Talbot Theological Seminary.

Dr. Watson was nominated for his fellowship at Oxford Brookes by Dr. William Gibson, an ecclesiastical history professor at the institute. A public university, Brookes was found in 1992 by former University of Oxford academics. The school dates back to Oxford Polytechnic (est. 1970) and Oxford School of Art (est. 1865), and its history department is widely regarded for quality in research.
