CCU Wins National Christian College Forensics Invitational
Colorado Christian University students will return from the National Christian College Forensics Invitational with a trunk load of hardware this year, after the debate team won the national tournament. The CCU debate team was named the top squad in its division (schools under 2,000) in only its second year of competition.
"There were many highlights this year," said Dr. Chris Leland, director of debate at CCU, "but I was thrilled that all of our teams advanced out of the preliminaries to elimination rounds. Plus, the team of Stephen Scheffel and Andrew Wyckoff won the national finals -- beating out teams from Wheaton College, Cedarville University, Liberty University, and more."
The fourteenth annual tournament, held at John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, hosted 24 schools. Other highlights included the first year team of Lauren Holmes and Kjiersten Rold advancing to the semifinals; Holmes and Rold were also named the second best overall speaker at the tournament and the ninth, respectively. Andrew Wyckoff was tabbed as the eighth overall speaker.
The invitational was held from March 9-11, 2013, and marks only part of the debate team's tour. Competitors are now headed to the Pi Kappa Delta National Honor Society tournament in St. Louis, held March 16-18.
This debate win comes on the heels of a strong showing at the Great Salt Lake Invitational in January, and marks the rapid rise of the second year team.
