Biography and Professional Achievements

Dr. Alex Marquez joined the College of Adult and Graduate Studies in 2024 in his current role. Prior to this, he worked as a pre-service teacher field coach for CCU in the fall 2022 term and is thrilled to now serve our students in a more expanded capacity. Dr. Marquez started his career in education after graduating from Florida State University in 1990 with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education. He taught elementary music for one year, high school band for five years, and middle school band for two years. Dr. Marquez transitioned into school administration in 1999, where he served as a K-12 Christian school principal for five and a half years. During this time, he received a Master of Science in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University. In 2006, Dr. Marquez and his family moved from Florida to Colorado Springs, where he was the principal of a charter elementary school for two years and a charter high school for 14 years. In 2023, he graduated from Kansas State University with a doctorate degree in Curriculum and Instruction. During his doctoral program, he gained valuable post-secondary experience working as an adjunct instructor, teacher assistant, and field experience mentor for students earning their Master of Arts in Teaching. In addition, he does part-time work at KSU as a master’s portfolio administrator and editorial assistant for their education journal. He holds active Colorado professional educator licenses in K-12 music and school administration.

Dr. Marquez met his wife and best friend, Ruthie, in 1985, and they have been happily married since 1990. They live in Colorado Springs and have four boys: two who are with the Lord and two who are adults. Dr. Marquez enjoys teaching the Bible and encouraging others in Christ both in small and large group studies, as well as filling the pulpit when invited. Dr. Marquez is also active in the arts, where he has written plays, scripts, and has been involved in community theater. He is the conductor of the New Horizons Band of Colorado Springs’ Symphonic Band, which was a lifelong dream and answer to prayer. In addition, he enjoys playing euphonium in the organization’s Concert Band. Along with the study of God’s Word, Dr. Marquez’s research interests include improving physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual self-care, encouraging healthier relationships with others, financial guidance, psychology, and counseling. In his personal time, Dr. Marquez can be found with Ruthie walking, hiking, e-biking, watching a show, cheering for the Broncos, reading, and tinkering around the house or their backyard suburban farm, which is home to a large garden, many chickens, four milk goats, a very mischievous cat, and an adorable miniature husky.
