Biography and Professional Achievements
John Sevy serves as the Affiliate Faculty of Percussion at CCU. As an accomplished drummer, percussionist, and educator - John can be seen touring with various groups, teaching masterclasses at universities across the country, or swinging in your local jazz club. He has presented as both performer and educator in 16 states, including engagements with PASIC, CMEA, and touring nationally with the Vienna Light Orchestra.
John has been fortunate to have performed alongside artists such as Tony Desare, Greg Gisbert, Fabian Almazan, Steven Feifke, Alex Wignall, Zach Rich, and Gabriel Mervine as well as ensembles such as Ballet Indiana, Boulder Philharmonic, Richmond Symphony, Columbus Symphony, and many others. Besides an active freelancing schedule, John is dedicated to music education - teaching at the Community College of Denver, Red Rocks Community College, and leading his own private lesson studio in Westminster.
Faith and Learning
As a Christian educator, John’s number one goal is to provide an environment where students can grow in both their walk with Christ and their development into capable and confident musicians. When considering teaching strategy and philosophy, John looks to how Jesus taught. He believes Jesus is the best example of a teacher we have. He was interactive with students, asked deep questions, and used creative stories to communicate His points.
These teaching devices are very powerful for a musician. John asks students questions, demonstrates concepts on each instrument, and teaches through lessons he has learned from his own past experiences and walk with Christ. To be a successful musician in the 21st century, students must be capable and well-rounded not only in their performance, but in their character as well. John’s studio is aimed at helping students become the type of people they are called to be, using music as a voice for their talents, emotions, and relationship with Christ.
