Biography and Professional Achievements
Dr. Sharon Hastings is honored by a lifelong love from her Savior, Who has given her multiple opportunities for teaching and learning. She is most proud of her faith, her family, and her gifts. She has been a teacher all her life, including band, school counseling, principalships, chaplaincy, and university and seminary professorships.
Highlights include:
- One of her schools was awarded the RAMP designation.
- She wrote the grant for and started an alternative middle school for at-risk teens.
- She is a missionary with One Challenge International, with whom she has served in multiple countries.
- She has been a teacher for the Danforth Foundation for many years at International Youth Foundation Leadership Conferences.
- She received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Colorado School Counselor’s Association.
- She and her husband Walt live in Golden, Colorado, with 11 grandkids and 3 adult children. They enjoy travel and cruising, skiing and hiking, camping, and sharing their therapy dog, Crosby, at hospitals and prisons.
Publications and Presentations
Dr. Hastings has given over 50 presentations across the country, including topics such as RAMP achievement, Teamwork, Grief, Leadership, and At-Risk Kids. She leads retreats for many organizations.
Faith and Learning
Faith is the cornerstone of counseling. Learning at CCU prepares students to be a light and a blessing to those they counsel. It’s what happens through them that matters.
Dr. Sharon Hastings believes that one learns best from life by having experienced it in very real, dramatic, unique, and sometimes deliberate terms. Learning is a joyful process of discovery; diversity and individualism are celebrated, and success and failure both are valued as stepping stones to more growth. God's people shine light — His light — in dark places and bring hope where all seems lost. Counseling is not a job. It is a gift to be invited into these tender, transformative moments in the lives of others.
Dr. Hastings' role as a professor is to know them well, look out for them well, and love them well. She considers it a sacred honor to walk beside them and let God speak through her. There is power in the with — pray with, learn with, laugh with, struggle with. She is committed to doing life together with her students.
