Thomas N. Scheffel serves as the University's counsel. He has been practicing law in Denver since 1977. Scheffel opened his own firm in 1984. The firm can be described as a general practice commercial law firm with a special emphasis in tax with his personal focus being in the areas of wills, trusts, estate tax planning, and estate administration.

Scheffel has been admitted to practice before the Colorado and Wisconsin state courts and the U.S. Tax Court. He has served as a member of the tax section of the American Bar Association.

Scheffel has been a featured speaker at various seminars and organizations, including the Rocky Mountain Financial Symposium sponsored by the International Association of Financial Planners, the Colorado Association of Life Underwriters, the Colorado Brokerage Association “Taxation Overview Workshop,” the Salvation Army Deferred Giving Committee Symposium, the Special Olympics of Colorado Annual Conference, the Rocky Mountain Chapter of Certified Life Underwriters, Colorado State University, Jefferson County Extension Office, and various individual estate planning seminars held throughout Denver and the Western Slope.

Scheffel has also served as adjunct instructor for the American College Graduate School of Financial Sciences and currently teaches business law and non-profit law as a practitioner professor at Colorado Christian University.
